It is located on the east side of the Kern River, about north-northwest of Bakersfield and south-southwest of Visalia. Hawthorne was founded in 1853 by John C. Fremont and named for General James K. Polk's home in Ohio. The first post office opened in Hawthorne on October 26, 1854. In 1864, Hawthorne became part of the new San Joaquin County when it was organized from parts of Tulare and Kern counties. The first store in Hawthorne was established by Wm Hickey on December 4, 1864. A Post Office Department building been erected hereon by Mr Hickey July 3rd 1865 and occupied until 1915 when it burned down in a fire that destroyed many buildings in town In 1916, a school district was created to serve portions of San Joaquin County including Hawthorne which included parts of Tulare and Kern Counties as well as parts of Merced and Plumas Counties In 1922, an agricultural fair was held at the town square where local farmers exhibited their products A movie theater called Theaters had been built just north of town square but were destroyed during World War II It has been said that Hawthorne may have been place where Jethro Tull played their last show before leaving for England

It grew rapidly and by 1872 it had reached a peak with over 250 residents. However, the Panic of 1873 caused a decline in Hawthorne's population and its economy. By 1886, only twenty-four people lived in the town.
