Hawaii Gardens, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Palmdale Union School District. Hawaii Gardens is named after the Hawaiian islands of Kaua'i and Niʻihau. The town was founded by John Dickey in 1907 as a small station on the main line from Los Angeles to San Francisco. In 1916, Dickey built a community on what is now State Route 175 between Honolulu and Kailua-Kona. By 1928, Hawaii Gardens had become an incorporated village with its own government and school district. The village grew rapidly due to its location near important railroads and highway corridors. In 1967, Hawaii Garden's incorporation became effective and it began developing land for a new city which would later be called Riverside City. However, plans for Riverside City were never realized because of economic difficulties in the early 1970s. In 1980, when Interstate 5 was being built through Kern County, manyrant residents decided that they wanted their own local airport in their town so they started construction on a new airport adjacent to the old state route 175 airstrip which became known as "Hanauma Airport". The project cost $1 million and took two years to complete; however, it did not result in any increase in traffic or tourism to Hawaii Gardens since there was no commercial airline service available from Hanauma Airport at that time.

The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Pacific Coast and its proximity to the U.S. Navy's Pearl Harbor Naval Base. In 1959, Hawaiian Gardens became part of Orange County, California. The town is known for its unique architecture, which includes structures such as the Kaumana (wattle) house and Hawaii Garden Apartments. The town also has a number of cultural attractions, including two preserved churches, an Ala Moana Park beach park and an ancient lava tube tour called "Lava Tube history."
The Hawaiian Gardens area is located in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne, California. The gardens were opened to the public on October 15, 1892 by King Kalākaua and his wife Queen Liliʻuokalani. The garden was initially a small watering hole for the many palaces and private residences owned by members of the royal family. The plants and flowers in the garden were created with tax-deductible donations from citizens of Los Angeles. In 1907, King Kamehameha I donated land to expand and improve Hawaiian Gardens. He also commissioned noted architect Frederick Law Olmsted to design a new palace for the king and queen at Hawaiian Gardens. In 1912, Kamehameha II transferred ownership of Hawaiian Gardens to his son Ka’ahumanu III. The original structure that stands today at Hawaiian Gardens was built between 1893 and 1896 as a residence for Prince Kīlauea Kuʻiiolo? Keaweafū (the third son of Kalākaua). It was designed by George Cope Hosmer & Company and constructed using funds provided by Queen Liliʻuokalani. The architecture is characterized by its classical Revival style with distinctive features such as peaked roofs, arches, flanking turrets, entablature below pedimented rooflines, vaults with pointed windowsills, elaborate details on doorways and window hoods, rusticated quoins around fireplace Hearths (nickel plaques identifying each house), extensive use of granite quoins instead of mortar or brick components within walls where possible (often seen elsewhere only on post-Revolutionary era buildings),and wood frame construction which allowed for natural ventilation without air conditioning or heating during hot weather months. A dedication ceremony for Hawai’ian Garden took place on July 17th 1897 before an audience including President Grover Cleveland who inspected altered plans submitted by architects Hosmer & Company; Wigwam Bros.; Horseshoe Builders; Bennett Brothers; Smith brothers; Fenton brothers; Nourse Brothers Ltd.; Jett brothers Contracting Co.; Wirtz Hardware Co., trustees appointed Mrs Sallie Hitchcock [1875-1947], Mrs Emma McKinney [1881-1967], Miss Anna Bradford [brought up in Honolulu], among others under the auspices of “Her Majesty’s Government Department Of Agriculture And Forestry” presided over by Acting Superintendent James Ayeran [1863-1941]. Captain David Jones served as grand marshal while Mr John Armstrong acted as interpreter
