The gardens were built by sugar businessmen and hoteliers in the 1920s as an escape from their everyday lives on the Islands. The gardens are now a popular tourist destination with over 2 million visitors each year. The first sugar plantations were established on Kaua'i in the early 1800s. In 1853, Captain James Cook landed on Kaua'i and discovered the island's potential for cane production when he noticed large trees growing where there was no previous evidence of them. By 1860, three sugar estates had been founded on Kaua'i and by 1865, all but one of those plantations had been abandoned because of prohibitive costs and lack of acreage. However, began to be restored thanks to donations from American missionaries who saw it as a way to help spread Christianity among Polynesians. In 1868 Hawaiian Electric Company began operating electrical lights in Honolulu which made possible new plantation growth throughout Hawaiʻi; however, Hawaiian Electric Company failed to make any significant profits until after World War II whenatural gas became available (and cheaper) than coal for powering transportation systems across much of Asia and Europe (thus creating what has come to be known as "the Japanese Century"). In 1917, Hawaiian Gardens was developed by Harry Fenton with his brother-in-law Clarence Bennett as part of an estate they purchased along with other land holdings near Anaheim Hills in Los Angeles County for $1 million dollars. The Fenton brothers were primarily interested in developing 9 acres around their nursery called "Kaua'i" into what would become one of Southern California's most famous tourist attractions—an artificial paradise complete with white sand beaches, lush vegetation, palm trees and ferns lining trails through interpretive exhibits about local history and culture. The original structures at Hawaiian Gardens consisted only of two tennis courts used by employees during lunchtime while also housing a few hundred plants (now estimated at 4500). On July 17th 1922 (eleven years after its construction), Hawaii Governor David Irvine knighted Captains Harry Fenton and Clarence Bennett at Government House before hosting a send off ballroom dance function attended by dignitaries including President Warren G Harding; this marked the beginning of what would eventually become known as "the Garden Era". After World War I ended hostilities between America & Japan created many opportunity for friendship & trade so establishment such as Hanauma companies reopened which led to industry revival throughout Hawaiʻi leading up to WWII when prices rose due KAUPPI LAND becoming available again! Hawaii Gardens, California was founded in 1909 by Judge Hiram Bingham as a public park and garden on the edge of Honolulu. The land was donated by the Hawaiian government and it became a state park in 1912. In 1924, Kamehameha I moved the capital of Hawaii from Lahaina to Waikiki, so that the new capital would not be subject to attack by pirates. The Hawaiian gardens were used as a military barracks during World War II. After the war, the islands were placed under American jurisdiction and many of Hawaiis cultural artifacts were preserved at Hawaii Gardens. In 1959, after RSSS acquired majority ownership of Kalihi Island from King David Kalakaua, many of Hawaiis cultural artifacts were transferred to Kailua-Keahegan National Monument on Kauai while Hawaii Garden remained an open-air museum. In 1978, Hurricane Iniki destroyed much of Kauai's coral reefs which made swimming unwise for most people. As a result, the park closed for about two years while repairs were done to improve swimmer safety and infrastructure. reopened in 1980 with improved swimmer safety and infrastructure; however renovation stopped in 1984 when Haleakala Volcano erupted causing serious damage to both parks infrastructure
