In 1865, Hawaiian Gardens was designated as the site of a new exposition to be held in 1868. The exposition was created to showcase the newly developed United States. In order for residents of San Francisco and other nearby cities to have access to this important event, the city donated land on Ghirardelli Square. With an area of just over one acre, Hawaiian Gardens would be home to only a few hundred people at its peak. The first structure erected on the square was the George Washington Hotel, which opened in 1869. This hotel served as both a social and business center for visitors visiting Hawaii Gardens. Over time, other structures were added toHawaiian Gardens: the First Baptist Church (1872), Masonic Lodge No. 7 (1875), and the Post Office Building (1887). During World War II, Hawaiian gardens became an important basecamp for military personnel stationed in California and Nevada. As such, many buildings were constructed within its boundaries: including barracks, hospitals, airfields and even a weather station. By 1945, Hawaiian Gardens had become one of Northern California's most vibrant communities; it remained so until it was destroyed by fire in 1977. Today there are few reminders that once Hawaiian Gardens existed; however, its legacy is still evident throughout its namesake square today. Many businesses still reside within its walls; as well as numerous cultural attractions which include art galleries and museums open to the public. The park itself has also been completely renovated several times since it was founded in 1865- most recently in 2013- making it one of Hawai'i's most popular tourist destinations again!

The estate's lush gardens were perfect for hosting social events such as dances, picnics, and balls. The estate also had several handsome buildings including a chapel, tennis courts, and a golf course. By the 1920s, Hawaiian Garden Estate had become one of the most prestigious vacation spots in Southern California. Due to its popularity and location, Hawaiian Garden Estate also became known for its acclaimed luxury hotels – including The El Dorado Hotel which opened in 1923 and is still standing today. Additionally, murals painted by notable artists such as Edward Hopper are found throughout the property. Hawaii Gardens, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,898 at the 2000 census. The town is located on the eastern edge ofranch of Kern County and on the western edge of Sequoia National Park. The town is named after Honolulu, Hawaii and was founded by Captain Edward Fenton in 1894 as an agricultural outpost on the Paloua River. In 1906, the townsite was transferred to Sequoia National Park and renamed "Hawaii Gardens." From its inception until it lost its status as a city in 1959, Hawaii Gardens was home to a small military detachment known as Hana Hou (The Dolphin). Today there are scattered remnants of this community including A-frame houses built during World War II; three baseball diamonds; and two churches. The history of Hawaiian Gardens goes back more than 120 years. It started with Captain Edward Fenton who purchased land east of Anaheim in 1894 for farming purposes. He named his new settlement "Hana Hou" which means "the dolphin." After purchasing additional land near present day Hawthorne Boulevard and Vinegar Hill Road, he built a fortified farmstead known as Pahoa House which he called "Hawaii's Fort".

Hawaii Gardens, California is an agricultural center in the Inland Empire of Southern California. The town was founded in 1907 by Hawaiian immigrants and their families who had come to America as plantation slaves. The town became a citrus grower and then developed as a resort town. The original Kaapana Hilton Hotel, now the Hawaii Gardens Marriott Resort & Spa, was built in 1936. The mainland part of the state of California changed hands several times during the Gold Rush era and many Native Americans were killed or driven out when gold seekers discovered rich deposits near Coalinga (now Burbank). It wasn't until 1853 that General Mariano Vallejo established control over what is now Orange County when he acquired Rancho Cucamonga from Juan Bautista de Anza. After Mexican-American war hero Genoa Marshall bought Rancho La Paloma from Mexico's emperor Vicente Guerrero in 1856, Marshall donated it to American citizens for use as a military post on Mission Peak near unfinished city of San Diego. The first permanent settler was John Dodge who arrived with his family at Lahaina Plantation on Kaua’i on January 6, 1907. Dodge owned about one acre (4,600 m²) of land which he sold for $5 per acre ($46 per hectare) to George Kawaikini Pulekau and Wehelani Ikahele in 1916. In 1917 two brothers by the name of Kaliloho purchased majority interest in Kaua’i Honda Citrus Growers Cooperative Association which grew produce such as oranges, grapefruit, tangerines and lemons across Kaua’i island before moving production to Ruislip Manor where they renamed it Hawaii Gardens after King David Kalākaua's visit thereto in 1893. In 1937 businessman Harry Chandler bought 1/3 interest sharing with hotel developer Bernice Pauahi Nielsen while their wives ran the day-to-day operations at Hawai'ian Villas & Garden Club which evolved into famous Hawai'ian Gardens hotel chain today operated by her son Harry Chandler III under various names including Tenant Corporation Hawaiian Gardens Vacation Rentals Inc., Hawaiian Gardens Resort & Spa LLC., etc.). He married Niʻihau woman Liliʻuokalani Kahiko circa 1935; together they had one child: Honolulu born Hīnuhina Aiona Chandler (1936–2009). He died suddenly at his home on December 11th 2009 aged 89 years old leaving behind wife Liliʻuokalani Kahiko with five children: Hīnuhina Kawena Aiona Chandler (born 1944), Barack Hussein Obama Jr.(born 1945), Kamala Devi Ngozi Osemele(born 1946), Maya Kapiolani(born 1948). His remains are interred next to his parents at Punchbowl Cemetery outside Honolulu HI
