In 1892, the City of Honolulu contracted with J.H. Laughlin & Sons to design and produce a new type of knife called the "Lahaina Knife." This knife was designed as a practical tool to be used by farmers on the island of Kaua’i. The blade was made from 12" (30 cm) long bladed steel with an 8" (20 cm) wide cross-section that was tapered towards the tip for precision cutting. The Lahaina Knife has been described as being unique in that it possesses both a carved hilt and guard attached to either side of the blade by two brass screws that allow it to be easily attached or detached from scabbards worn around neck on men's belts at many moments during its lifetime. There are also many ferns including Hanaakalā fern (Haliaeetus hawaiiensis) and Aupuni mahōlehua fern (Aphanistoma antirrhopus). Many types of flowers are found such as Hawaiian sweet potato flowers (Solanum tuberosum), mokuhonopuna onion flowers (. . .)
