The Kaua'i people were forced to leave their home island by Diamond Head Lighthouse and other forces in 1898 during the US military occupation of Hawaii. They moved to Palos Verdes Peninsula and built Kapaa Ranch before coming to present-day Orange County in 1902. In 1913 they established Waimea Garden on Kapi'olani Hill overlooking Honolulu Harbor. In 1924 they developed the first major botanical garden in Southern California with 1,500 trees and plants including 67 types of palms, 115 types of lilies, 126 types of tulips, 66 kinds of roses, 20 varieties of figs and 16 types of vines. In 1933 they opened their second garden on Pico Boulevard adjacent to UCLA's Law School Campus as well as a research lab for horticulture. In 1938 they founded another botanical garden on Makawao Reef off Kaua'i which continues today as one of the largest open-air gardens in North America with 5 hectares (12 acres) devoted to plants representing more than 300 species from all over the world. In 1961 they donated land near Hollywood Hills for what became known as Hawaii Gardens Park which remains one of Los Angeles County's most popular tourist destinations today despite occasional vandalism or fire damage caused by park visitors who mistake it for an amusement park wishlist item

Hawaiian Gardens is a botanical garden in the city of Hawthorne, California. It was founded by Major George Nakano and his wife Mrs. Kawasaki in 1907 as a gift to their friends, including Captain James Cook and his wife Lady Charlotte Bronte. The garden is located on 17 acres (7 hectares) of rolling hills near the intersection of State Route 92 and Arrowsmith Road. It contains more than 2,500 plants and trees from around the world, as well as an exhibition hall with a collection of about 350 objets d'art. The first public show at Hawaiian Gardens was held in 1909. In 1912, General Electric began building an electric plant on the property; this caused Hawaiian Gardens to become one of the first gardens in the United States to be dedicated to energy conservation. From 1916-1920, Hawaiian Gardens was home to the American Botanic Garden's Asia Section; during this time they collected plants from Japan and Korea for shipment back to America. In 1933, Hollywood movie star Joan Crawford leased part of Hawaiian Gardens for use as her private arena for acting rehearsals and functions; she continued to use it until her death in 1984. In 1944–1945, Japanese American troops were interned there while they awaited trial at Alcatraz Island; many of these soldiers are believed to have grown food at Hawaiian Gardens for their own sustenance. In 1971–1972, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park purchased 1/2 acre (0.24 hectare) adjoining Hawaiian Gardens from Professor Emeritus Harry Emerson Fosdick for $10,000 The park has also been responsible for fundraising which has funded many maintenance projects such as new fencing around the visitor center and addition of a playground and hot tubs within the park itself since its creation- making it one of only two such parks in North America that still retains its original design elements dating back before 1870! Finally since 2002 when park management was transferred from Cal Poly Pomona’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department – faculty members joined together with community support through Friends Of Hawai‘i Parks & Recreation Committeemember Lisa Nishimura who led efforts involved formation of Hviezda Conservation Society which manages over 12 acres (5 hectares) adjacentto main entrance & picnic area). Today over 60% understory growth occurs within hemlock woodlands managed by Hviezda Conservation Society along side cultural resources including endangered or threatened species found nowhere else on Earth
