Gun Target History in Hawaiian Gardens, California began with the arrival of the U.S. Navy on Kaua’i in 1898. The ship USS Olympia had been brought over to provide target practice for American sailors and Marines stationed on the island chain. The targets were set up at various locations around the harbor, but it was at one location near Nimitz Boulevard and Kapiolani Avenue that America’s first shooting range was established. The first gunnery school on Kaua’i was opened in 1900 by Rear Admiral John Wainwright with instruction from Commander George Dewey himself. This school became known as “Hawaiian Garden School” and operated until 1916 when it moved to Lahaina where it remains today as a museum open to the public. In 1915, Commander Dewey also ordered the construction of a barracks for Naval personnel on Hawai’i Island which became known as “Dewey Barracks Hawaii Island Gunnery School” after him. In 1922, Captain Harry Henshaw organized a group of men to shoot guns at an old plantation site located outside of Honolulu called “Hualalae Plantation Gunnery Range & Ammunition Hill Shooting Ground” which is now part of Kalihi Beach Resort and Golf Course. This range is still used today as a firing ground for rifle, pistol and machinegun fire by military personnel and civilians alike! Beginning in 1929, Captain Harry Henshaw organized another group of men to shoot guns at Kapiʻolani Parkknown then as Punahou Park Gunnery Range & Pistol Hill Shooting Ground! This park is still used today for target practice by both military personnel and civilians alike! AfterCaptain Harry Henshaw died in 1934 his widow donated these ranges (along with other property) to the city of Honolulu for use as a public park! In 1946, Mayor Frank Yodawa dedicated this park including all of its ranges to the nation pursuant to Executive Order 9265! Today, Hawaiian Gardens enjoys Leslie Stover Park - one of only two continuously managed parks within Honolulu City Limits – which encompasses 26 acres adjacent to Punchbowl Road between Aina Street and Kapiolani Boulevard; contains more than 1,000 shooting lanes/holes; features overlooks overlooking Waimea Valley; has playgrounds (including an outdoor waterpark), tennis courts (volleyball court), basketball court(s), butterfly garden[], botanical gardens[], dog exercise area[], skateboard alley[], carousel [and] golf course!

Since then Hawaiian Gardens has undergone many changes including being used as a military airbase during World War II; becoming part of the city government; being leased to private landowners until 1966 when it reverted back to the city; becoming part of UCLA until 1984 when it became part of UCLA–Los Angeles campus; hostling numerous world championships (summer sports) including tennis and golf tournaments throughout its history; transferring ownership to CBS Corporation in 1995 which left it under control of Time Warner Entertainment Company (now Comcast) before reverting back to the city government on October 1st 2006.
