The town was first settled by the Kamehameha family in 1821. The original name for Hawaiian Gardens may have been "Kahalahea". In 1852, the brothers Kaumanu and Honolulu purchased land east of Hawaiian Gardens from Captain John Richardson for $1,000. They began to build a home there called Kahalau Kuilana which still stands today on Kuilana Drive. Hawaiian Gardens grew rapidly and by 1860 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1863, Hawaii sent an envoy to London with news that King Kamehameha III would be marrying his daughter Kawiliuhanui II at Windsor Castle in England on August 15th. Many residents in Hawaiian Gardens had hoped to see the princess arrive at their doorstep but were disappointed when she did not show up. On October 1st 1862, after much discussion and consideration among residents ofHawaii Gardens about whether or not they should celebrate Hawai'i's new monarchy under English rule (the king held no power outside of his wife), they voted unanimously to remain loyal to their queen and observe traditional monarchial customs throughout her stay in England including eating cooked food without knives or forks and refusing invitations to dine with her husband or attend court events where protocol dictated she should be present. Herein lay the genesis for what would become known as "Hānai I Hōkūnē" (Hawaiian Gardeners). This term has been used ever since to describe all those who cultivated land within these boundaries despite lacking royal status themselves... even though some members of this community may have enjoyed privileges denied others due simplyto their proximity to royalty! After spending time living among her new friends and observing English society through live television broadcasts from Windsor Castle (which helped him prepare for his upcoming role as king), Kawiliuhanui returned home on November 17th 1863 - two days before her father's birthday - triumphant having fulfilled every promise made during her visit! After returning home, she designed herself a coronet such as none other then Queen Victoria herself wore while residing in Britain - an event now celebrated annually as Poignant Ceremony: A Royal Visit by a Princess! On December 5th 1863, Kawiliuhanui married Prince Albert Victor Sinclair of New Zealand at Westminster Abbey; becoming one of only two women ever married unto British subjects - both times without either parent being present! As part of this ceremony many handcrafted pieces were presented including three kalo pendants worn around neck depicting scenes from ancient Polynesia including Tahiti & Niʻihau . She also received an extravagant four day trip aboard HMSO completed with concerts at various venues throughout London followed by dinner at Buckingham Palace where she conversed with HRH The Duke Of Edinburgh about horticulture! After arriving back in Hawai'i on January 6th 1865 she announced that starting May 1st 1865 all flowers will be priced one dollar per pound instead thereof prior thereto... resulting in increased sales for local farmers who could now offer more competitive prices!!! This move led directly to increased tourism leading to tax revenue for local governments which supported education & infrastructure development across Hawaiʻi thru public works projects!!!
Hawaii Gardens was founded in 1868 by James K. Polk as a concessionary for the US military at Fort Point on the Bay Bridge. In 1865, the fort was decommissioned and its land became part of what is now Honolulu. The Hawaiian gardens were established to commemorate and perpetuate American soldiers who had served there.
