The community was founded in 1902 by two brothers, Harry and John Kawasaki, who opened a small general store on the edge of their garden. The Kawasaki family continued to operate the business until it was sold to James A. White in 1925. White developed the property into what is now Hawaii Gardens with his nursery and greenhouse as its main attractions. Hawaii Gardens has become a popular tourist destination for people from all over Northern California because of its beautiful gardens, diverse plant life, and easy access to nature. The community also provides a place for families to enjoy safely playing together in their outdoor spaces while also hosting events such as picnics and crafts nights.

Hawaii Gardens is a small community located in the hills of Southern California just outside of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1907 by two Hawaiian businessmen, Clarence and Lili Kaho'olawe, who donated land to create a botanical garden. The first acreage was purchased from the Hahine family for $10. On September 15, 1907, the Kaho'olawe-owned Home Garden Club planted an orange tree on what is now the street corner known as Kalakaua Avenue and Kapiolani Boulevard. The park began to grow rapidly and soon acquired additional land. In 1912, it purchased another 2 acres from Mr. Waimanalo for $50. By 1920, Hawaii Gardens had grown to 8 acres with a well- Designed Botanical Garden that included over 100 different plants including Tea Tree (Erythroxylum lanatum), Kokomo Palm (Stenotus kokomo), Mango (Mangifera indica), Papaya (Papaya chinensis) and many more! In 1927, they hired Fredrick Lawler as their first Superintendent of Parks & Recreation which would continue until 1959 when he became director general of government services under Governor Earl Warren! As part of its centennial celebration in 1957, Hawaii Gardens erected a new Officers’ House which still stands today on Kalakaua Avenue near Kapiolani Boulevard. In 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower designated Hawaii Gardens as a National Monument providing protection for its unique resources as well as its history and culture. The park has since been open to the public free of charge every day since then making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California! Today there are also several visitor centers available such as the visitors center on Kalakaua Avenue adjacent to Kapiolani Boulevard which offers exhibits about the history and culture of Hawaiians here at Hawaii Gardens; or at nearby Fordham University where you can learn about Waianae Coast stories; or even down at Hollywood Bowl where you can watch performances from local artists or visit their studios! There are also several restaurants scattered throughout the park so whether you want breakfast or dinner there’s something for everyone! But our favorite part about Hawaii gardens? They have no admission fee so come experience all that this beautiful community has to offer without having to leave your home!!
Hawaii Gardens was a plantation on the island of Hawaii. It was founded by Captain James Cook in 1779 and grew to be one of the largest plantations in North America. The plantation was bought by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in 1853 and it became known as Morse Place after them. In 1906, the property was sold to the City of Los Angeles for $1 million. The land was used as a city park until it was donated to UCLA in 1959.
