Gun hammers were first used in Hawaii in the early 1800s. The Hawai'ian guns were made of wood and had a small, makeshift hammer that was used to bash the head of an animal with. This technique was used for hunting and ceremonial purposes. In 1854, Captain Eliakim Ballagh decided to emigrate to Hawai'i and brought with him his gun hammer. He began using this tool for forging nails and other objects on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i. Captain Ballagh's Hammer Museum is located on Kaua'i today and preserves Captain Eliakim Ballagh's original gun hammer as well as examples of his hammered nails, tools, and artifacts from theHawaiian gardens where he lived and worked from 1854-1860.

From its humble beginnings as an agricultural community, Hawaiian gardens has grown into one of Southern California's most vibrant communities with more than 2,000 residents who enjoy its natural beauty and cultural history. Gun hammers were first developed in the early 1700s. At that time, hammers were used to pound nails into wood. By the 1790s, hammers had evolved into rifle hammers, which were used to shoot ballistics gelatin films. Rifle hammers remained in use until the late 1800s when they were replaced by gunsmith’s hammer. Hammer technology has since evolved again and is now used primarily in the repair of firearms and other tools.
In 1847, Samuel Colt patented the first practical handgun. The revolver was a double-action system that used a hammer to cock the gun and fire it.
Hawaiian Gardens was founded in 1887 as a private botanical garden on the grounds of the now-demolished Hawaii Hotel. The original Holland Park Estate was purchased in 1886 by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail, who had also donated land for the park. In 1902, Hawaiian Gardens became part of the City of Pasadena. In 1907, Hawaiian Gardens became a public park with an area of . It remained a privately owned park until 1959 when it was sold to the city for $2 million. The city has operated Hawaiian Gardens since then. Today, Hawaiian Garden is home to more than 2,000 acres (100 hectares) of natural gardens and parks that include oahu's largest rainforest and one of California's most extensive nature preserves. The garden contains more than 400 species of plants and trees, including some rare or endangered ones.
In 1887, when the first Hawaiian Gardens were established on an area of land that is now known as Waimea Peninsula, the islands of Kaua'i and Niʻihau were still under British rule. The new plantation was named after King Kamehameha III's wife, Princess Liliuokalani. The Hawaiian Gardens estate included 1,500 acres (560 hectares) of forested land with a water supply from two reservoirs located near the present-day town of Hanalei. The gardens also had a small number of rice paddies and several hundred houses. The Hawaiian Gardens estate became one of the largest plantations in Hawaii because it produced sugar cane, coffee, bananas, pineapple, sweet potatoes and other crops for export to Europe and America. After Kamehameha III's death in 1893, his widow Queen Kalākaua took over management of the plantation. In 1907 she moved the main house from its original location on Keaweekapiola Road to what is now called Kalākaua Mansion on Hawaii Avenue in Honolulu. She also built a smaller house for herself at Hawaiiana Gardens. Heavily populated areas near Honolulu made it difficult for her to keep up with needs for maintenance and research; so she sold most or all of her holdings in 1959 to Edwin Sabin Jr., who renamed them "Hawaii National Park". Today part of Kaanapali Beach Resort & Spa is located on some former plantations adjacent to Hanauma Bay National Wildlife Refuge .
