Hawaii Gardens, California was founded in 1874 by Alex Haley. The orchard was originally called Hawaiian Orchard and changed its name in 1875 to the present-day Hawaii Gardens. In 1907, the Orphan Asylum opened at Hawaii Gardens. It served as a mother and child home for many years until it closed in 1978. The asylum became an official state historical landmark in 1984. The Hawaii Garden company operated a cactus nursery on the property from 1889 to 1918. From 1919 to 1929, the company ran a greenhouse on the property which yielded some of the world's first alien fruit trees (the Kapiolani Lighthouse tree is from this period). In 1916, during World War I, Hawaiian Gardens became part of United States Military Park #834. After World War I ended, the military vacated most of Honolulu and moved into Hawaii Gardens; however, they left behind their belatedly acquired Japanese collection of plants which formed what is now known as "The Japan Collection." In 1924, Hawai'i Electric Light Company built three substations on the property: one near Waianae Avenue and Kalakaua Street; another near Kapi'olani Boulevard and Mamaluhin Street; and another near Diamond Head Drive and Kapiolani Boulevard. Electricity began flowing through these new substations in 1925! A water tower also stood on site between 1926 and 1928 (now demolished). Itprovided drinking water for Honolulu residents until 1959 when western Samoa became an independent country therefore providing noWater service to anyone ). One such school that attended Hawkins School across Kalakaua street from Hawai'i Gardens during this time was Noongar School which taught children about Polynesia . In 1935-36 due to global economic instability caused by President Franklin D Roosevelt's New DealHawaii Electric Light Company leased land adjacent to their old main power station located at Punchbowl Road just north of Pearl Harbor from Pu’ukohola Sugar Land Co., Incorporated under license from Hanaʻi Sugar Land Co., Incorporated A few years later they decided not to renew their lease so the land reverted back into private hands but presently there is still some evidence remaining that suggests that electricity actually flowed through those wires even though it has been removed!
