Hawaii Gardens, California is home to the world's second largest binocular collection. The Binocular Museum was founded in 1912 by Dr. Harry Hixon and Mrs. Amalie Hixon, both of whom were natives of Hawaii. At its peak, the museum had more than 2,000 binoculars on display. Today, the Binocular Museum operates as a research center for binoculars and telescope sales in Hawai'i Gardens and throughout the United States. In addition to exhibit cases full of new or used binoculars from all over the world, the museum also has a library with more than 5,000 volumes onbinoculars and telescopes. The Hawaiian Gardens area was first settled by Kamehameha I in 1795. After his death in 1818, his son Kaahumanu took over rule of Hawai'i until he died in 1819 without an heir apparent. His widow then ruled as queen regnant until her death in 1840. In 1893, American missionaries arrived in Honolulu and began missionary work among the Hawaiian people. On November 15th of that year, they set up a small observatory on Malawai Street (now Kalakaua Boulevard) within sight of Kapi'olani Palace inside Honolulu Hale (the old Royal Palace). This observatory became known as "The American Observatory." This early aperture telescope observed variables such as sunspots and lunar eclipses through an eyepiece made from two pieces of glass held together with a metal clip so that it could be rotated around its central axis like a top! Later telescopes used mirrors instead of two pieces of glass but this design was not successful so they replaced it with an mirror-based telescope when America acquired Portugal's first astronomical telescope which was installed at Fort Pierce on December 7th 1789! Aperture telescopes continued to be developed during America's occupation but their demise came about because most Americans only wanted to use them for mapping purposes! When Japan gained independence from America in 1898 she started using aperture telescopes for astronomy due to her own interests in astronomy being aroused by what she saw as America's neglect of science! By 1902 almost all aperture telescopes had been abandoned due mainly to lack funding however some later developing designs managed to remain operational including one Japanese scientist who invented modern optics which led him to invent various types of prismatic lenses called Japanned glasses! Unfortunately he also received bad publicity when his invention caused Amos Stiles problems while trying unsuccessfullyto make spectacles for Professor Ulysses S Grant!) Nevertheless we continue making very good quality amateur grade scopes today just like our ancestors did many years ago!]

Today, Hawai‘i gardens continues to be an important part of USC’s campus life with a number of popular visitor attractions such as their aviary which contains more than 100 different birds species and their tropical forest which provides a rich environment for research studies in plant biology and forestry. The first gardens were near the present-day intersection of Mission Boulevard and Sloat Boulevard. In 1907, King Kalākaua donated land adjacent to his former home at Haleakala for the establishment of Hawaiian Gardens State Park. In 1917, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of civic buildings in Hawaii by virtue of its annexation into the United States. On December 12, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson signed Presidential Executive Order No. 808 making Hawaiian Gardens a US city under control of US troops stationed there during World War I until it fell back into Japanese hands after they withdrew from mainland Japan; this order transformed Hawaiian Gardens into one of America's most popular tourist destinations with more than 2 million visitors each year by 1925. On July 20, 1959 – two days after American entry into Peace Corps Year One – Hawaiian Gardens became one of just three cities across America to open their gates to volunteer corps members when National Service Day was celebrated that week by all 50 states represented in Washington Dc., culminating with a parade through downtown Honolulu led by UH Manoa graduates Hana’i Leiweke and John Pahinui Makalua (the future president). Volunteerism continued through 1960 when local governments throughout America closed their borders for vacation season; however, many Hawaiians decided returning home wasn't as great an option once they realized their loved ones had left them behind while Americans enjoyed themselves without any danger or interruption from warring factions within our own country! A total of 1,521 volunteers served at various locations across America during1959-1960 including Hawaiian Gardens which attracted nearly 7500 residents and visitors over that 3 years period.– more than double what had been attempted just 10 years earlier!
