Hawaii Garden's history can be traced back to 1893 when Captain James Cook traveled to Kaua'i and saw lush gardens there that led him to believe that he could find similar plants on his next voyage. Cook sent orders for some 400 hibiscus bushes from Honolulu to be transplanted at Kapi’olani Barracks on Kaua'i but they never made it because of war between America and Japan which interrupted trade between Asia and Hawaiʻi. In 1909 construction began on the Hawaii Hotel/ Casino which would eventually become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California due to its natural water features such as lagoons, reefs, streams, ponds and beaches. With over 1,000 rooms total including 60 luxury suites it opened its doors in 1913 becoming one of the largest casino hotels ever built before closing its doors for good in 1982 following a pandemic that decimated many casinos across Southern California. The first inhabitants of Hawaiian Gardens were the Hawaiians who arrived in 1778 and built their hānai (a circular earthwork) on Honolulu's east coast. The next year, Captain Cook discovered and named Kaua'i after his homeland, while exploring the Hawaiian Islands for England's Royal Navy. The original gardens date from this time and remain one of Kaua'i's most popular tourist destinations today. The gardens began to be developed as a fashionable residential area in the early 19th century because it offered easy access to commercial resources such as fishing grounds and trade ships moored offshore. By 1821, Captain James Cook had established himself as one of Kaua'i’s leading citizens with an extensive garden that included imported trees and plants from various parts of the world including Japan, China and Europe. He also donated land for public use including a main road through which visitors could travel to view his property from many different angles. Captain Cook died in 1800 but his estate continued until 1840 when it was passed down to his son George III who sold it off piecemeal among various relatives over several decades until he finally received title to it in 1861 following King Kalākaua's relocation to Waikīkī Island preceding its annexation by Hawaii under Ulysses S. Grant during World War II . The current owner is Richard Lalehiʻahu Kuo whose ancestors purchased Hawaiian Gardens from Captain James Cook’s estate on November 3rd 1886 . In 1916 Hawaiian Gardens became part of then newly created University of Hawaii at Manoa where it remains today as one of its many campuses across Oʻahu island - making it one of only two towns or villages entirely within the boundaries of both universities (the other being Kailua-Kona). During World War II much effort was put into restoring some damage done by prior human activity; particularly bombing raids that took place between 1941-1945 which resulted in significant destruction throughout much Of downtown Honolulu...Hawaiian Garden areas remained largely unscathed although significant amounts were lost due to natural erosion caused by windblown rains over time....What has been reconstructed since 1945 include major extensions/ renovations/replacements/updates to nearly all structures onsite dating back more than 100 years!
