Hanford, California is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of King County. The population was 571,564 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth most populous city in Washington after Seattle, Olympia, and Redmond. It is also one of the most densely populated cities in North America. Hanford is located on federal land east of Tacoma and north of Richland Township on the Columbia River near Mount Rainier National Park. The site where Hanford now stands was first occupied by Native Americans in 1792 as part of what would become Northwest Territory. In 1846, when diplomacy failed to resolve a dispute over title to land between Oregon and California, Congress approved an act creating Puget Sound country as part of what would be known as The United States of America (US). In 1847–48, work began on building a military fortification at Hanford for new Mexico City–Albuquerque Expedition under General Antonio López de Santa Anna; however, no army ever arrived to garrison it and no products from its production were exported until 1862 with the construction of Fort Sumter. The designation "Hanford" first appeared on maps circa 1890s-1910s due to its proximity to Richland Arsenal *(now Willamette University). In 1916-1917 during World War I production quotas for munitions created follow-on problems related to plutonium processing plant built adjacent - then called " Princeton Plant ". These plants were modernized following World War II with some components being transferred here such as reactors 3 & 4 at Hanford Site . As plutonium production increased during Cold War years there became more urgent need for raw materials which led DOE*(Department Of Energy) order in 1965 asking local contractor Klamath Falls Corporation name 6 other sites across nation including: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Savannah River Site (SRN), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Fermi National Accelerator Lab (Fermi Natl Labs) . All but two are closed or have been closed since then: Oak Ridge has been closed since 1988 while LANL's physics department merged into D'Este University's physics department effective 2006; Fermi Natl Labs has had several staff members move from Argonne National Laboratory to manage their laboratories themselves since 2007 including Tasio Kamiya who served as interim director from early 2009 until his resignation effective January 1st 2011*. There are currently two large nuclear weapons test sites operating at this time: weapon testing ranges at Marshall Island off Hawaii - completed tests ended in September 2016 - while weapons testing continue at Tonga Atoll off Tokelau - last tests ended December 20th 2019 *. The history surrounding Hanford begins with three events that led up to its establishment: purchase by USofA via Treasury Department Act Oct 25th 1846 – required compensation for land taken by Mexico during Mexican-American War – Work began June 12th 1850* (*date unknown) With only 7 months left before war’s end Congressional Chairman James Buchanan authorized $7 million outlay for supplies needed “for purposes both public and private”$27 million was obligated within 2 years primarily utilizing Army troops stationed along river banks & other points around town By 1855 all infrastructure necessary including water supply had been erected Presently area includes Junction Reservoir irrigating nearby towns 500 miles long main stem Columbia River
