The Hanford Site is a former uranium processing and plutonium production plant in northeastern Washington County, California. It was opened in 1963 as the Hanford Arsenal, and later became one of the nation's largest nuclear weapons sites. The site is now a part of the University of California, Davis campus. The Hanford Arsenal was built to produce atomic bomb material for Japan. In 1964, the arsenal was transferred to the United States Army Corps of Engineers for use as a decommissioned weapons storage facility. The arsenal continued to be used for storage until 1988. The first people to live in Hanford were the Chinamen. They arrived in 1853 and built a small community on the east bank of the river.
