A settlement was reached in 1998 which totaled $86 million dollars (an increase over initial estimates). However, more than 15 years later there are still concerns about potential health risks associated with continued use of contaminated land around Hanford Site

The name originated from an Inland Tongva word meaning "milk-carrying game bird." The Hanford Site (now known as Los Angeles metropolitan area) was developed between 1896 and 1900 by General Electric Company scientists working with Edward M. Whitehead, then director of Harvard University's Department of Earth Science. The site had been under consideration for many years as a location for a large electric power plant to be built east of Sacramento, but no such plant was ever built. One reason why there have never been large electric plants built at Hanford is that water resources there are very limited; electricity could only be generated through burning coal or oil instead. However, this limitation may soon be changing; construction is now underway on two new nuclear reactors at Fukushima Daiichi in Japan, which will add new water supplies to Hanford in addition to energy production. If these projects go ahead as planned, Hanford will become one of the largest generators of nuclear energy in the world!
