It is located on the Columbia River and has been the site of many military installations including Hanford Site No. 2, now known as the Hanford National Laboratory. The first human settlement in what is now Imperial County was at Yuba Pass on January 20, 1847 by José Cámpora and Manuel Nieto. They named their new settlement #Nueva Esperanza after Esperanza Chapel which they saw on horseback across the river from Yuba Falls. The first permanent habitation was an adobe built by José Cámpora in 1849 near present-day Union City. Actinomyces fontanus had arrived in California about this time and began to spread among the people of San Francisco Bay Area before being transported to Nevada by Peter Kapp and eventual discovery there of gold in 1849. In 1850, Nicholas Dooley discovered coal seams at Nye Valley along with future prospector John Wesley Powell and others during a geological survey for mining companies organized by Lieutenant Colonel Doniphan under patent number 871 from US Geological Survey Major George Wright entitled "Geology of Mines Near Carson City Nevada". This led to increased exploration activity around Nye Valley especially after construction of wagon road east from Sacramento through Nye Valley including access to coal pits discovered near present day Sunnyside Canyon east of Canoga Park; these were later developed into large mining operations with accompanying towns including Moon Lake (now part of Modesto), Race Hill (now part of Fresno), Oak Flat (now Vacaville), and New Market (present day Richfield). In addition, small amounts of silver were discovered at Sutter Butte although it didn't lead to significant revenue until well into the 19th century because silvermining required expensive equipment and transportation infrastructure not available until then anywhere near enough scale for significant production/export. Instead small amounts produced annually until 1861 when serious efforts commenced toOTHat would eventually become world famous as Google Earth photos show vast areas still lying undeveloped due primarily to government indifference toward mineral potential within hundreds or thousands miles radius!
