In 1910, the Hanford Arsenal was founded in Hanford, Washington by General Electric Company president Hiram Maxim. Arms production at the time was mainly for military use and munitions manufacturers. The arsenal produced a variety of firearms, including rifles, pistols, shotguns and cannons. Firearms production ended in 1951 when it merged with the Western Gun Works to form Western Gun Corporation. The company continued to produce arms until it closed its doors in 1978. During World War II, many weapons were developed at the Hanford Arsenal using plutonium created from uranium ore that had been mined in other parts of the world. Ammunition made from this material was also used during the war. In 1945, all weapon development stopped because of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which destroyed most of Japan’s nuclear weapons industry. After World War II, guns and ammunition production resumed at the site where gun parts were once manufactured; however, it primarily became a research center for new firearm technology as well as manufacturing new types of ammo and guns. In 1910, as part of general planning for Puget Sound area Development Plan #2 (WP 2), an estimated 1 million people were surveyed for potential settlement around present day Hanford City if available land became available on then undeveloped hills to the south and east of what is now downtown Seattle; about 710 homes were developed along arterial streets into what are today known as Auburn Boulevard, Eastlake Avenue NE, Evergreen Way NE/NW, Federal Way Avenue NW/SE., Indian Head Road SE/SW., Southcenter Drive SE/SW., University Way SW./NE., and White Rock Road NW/SE.. In 1916 an appropriation was made for dredging at Whatcom FSB which formed much of present day sites including Lowman Island; this work created large lakes which would be drained over time leading to creation of many small tributaries that flow into Lake Washington.. Most importantly however it created a basecamp where early twentieth century chemical tests were conducted on a massive scale with consequent environmental damage done both upstream from current site (Beacon Hill) as well as downstream from low flows areas near present-day Crystal Falls National Recreation Area adjacent to Interstate 5 just north of Spokane County line before reaching Clearwater Slough joining with Snake River about northeast of Wapato Creek mouth before emptying into Little Snake River just northwest of today’s Kelly Lake reservoirsite). This event which also led to establishment of military airfields at Salmon Bay Naval Air Station 8 miles due eastward from here as well as Kwajalein Atoll numerous miles further down stream including 3 small islands connected thereto plus 4 others scattered over 1400 acres forming Marshall Islands Field Group home island group) shortened name “Site C” or “Hanson Hill” renamed after Director George C Hanson – namesake for huge plutonium plant monstrosity located nearby across river Duwamish - Elysian Fields Preserve State Park upstream until its closure in 1974 – all while neighboring cities thrived thanks to burgeoning agricultural production attracted trucks carrying goods ashore daily servicing entire peninsula until World War II halted everything resulting in major impact on local communities impacted most harshly by war effort viz: Tacoma lost nearly 60% population lost jobs opportunities vacated residents left more than total number employed in Pierce County less than half those numbers ever returned since 1940s prior occupation Most recently extensive redevelopment taking place along I-5 corridor approaching town limits recent major project Chinese Camp inside city limits
