In 1892, Belgian scientist Constant Lambert developed a more reliable version of gun lasers that used an infrared ray instead of light. He named this new technology "Infrared Gun Lasers." In 1923, Italian physicist Giovanni Battista Fermi discovered that certain elements could be used to create high-power infrared lasers. These elements were called "Fermi Elements." The first practical infra-red guns were created in the late 1940s by American scientists David Sarnoff and Robert Hargrave using German technology. As important as these early pioneers were in developing gun lasers, there has been much development since then which has made them more efficient and powerful. Today'sgun lasers come in many shapes and sizes, with various applications such as security guard work, farming or healthcare treatments.

The Hanford Nuclear Installation was a nuclear weapons plant located in the small town of Hanford, California. It was built by the United States Atomic Energy Commission between 1945 and 1951 to produce plutonium for the atomic bomb project. The plant produced plutonium until 2002.
