By 1962, all plants had been replaced by modern reactors using uranium-235 pellets instead of natural gas becauseof fears over thumbTimeout A new reactor complex was built at Hanford that began operations on March 26, 1970 called Unit Ia (the Cooling towers). This reactor complex provided safe operating conditions for over 20 years before its retirement on September 30th 2003 due to safety concerns brought about by Three Mile Island Syndrome (TMI). With Unit Ia decommissioning came an end to American nuclear weapons production; however this did not mean that environmental problems were completely solved though they continue to be monitored carefully today through various programs such as monitoring groundwater levels near Site R-603 where spent fuel storage is located
