Hanford, California is a city in and the seat of Kings County, California. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Columbia River within the Hanford Valley region of eastern Washington and northern Oregon. The first humans to live in what is now Hanford were Native American people who may have been descended from the Paiute people. The area was first explored by Spanish missionaries in 1792, and it wasn't until 1864 that General George Custer became known for his victory over Indians at Battle of Washita Hill when he called it "Hanford". In 1887, local entrepreneurs founded a flour mill and foundry near present-day Hanford City Boulevard and I-5. The town grew quickly because of its strategic location on two main water routes - one running north to Portland, Oregon; the other running south to Seattle. In 1934, an interchange was built on I-5 between Interstate 5 and State Route 99 creating what is now known as "the Corridor". The area around Hanford became heavily populated with federal employeesjackets number 7 mileslong being developed near present day towns of Richland (on SR 99) and Yorktown (on I-5). In early 1942, during World War II efforts began to clean up sites contaminated with plutonium from reactor accidents at Bikini Atoll. One such site was named "Hanford" after General George Custer because it represented a major challenge for cleaning up plutonium contamination in western Washington state following reactor accidents at Enrico Fermi's Los Alamos National Laboratory at New Mexico's White Sands Missile Range. As part of this effort intentions were also to create jobs throughout west Washington while minimizing environmental damage done during cleanup operations which continued through 1945 including off shore work off our coast . The town gradually lost its importance as military production switched from plutonium production to missiles being developed at Los Alamos then Livermore National Laboratory beginning in 1951 which led to a decline in population size but steady growth overall due largely to highway development which bypassed town center
