As the world’s largest weapons plant, Hanford produced more than 50% of the world’s ammunition in the 1940s and 1950s. The plant was also home to one of America’s first nuclear reactors, a plutonium-239 processing plant, and a number of other facilities responsible for manufacturing munitions including ammo production magazines, propellant charges, artillery shells and rockets, sniper rounds and Small Arms Ammunition Development Program (SAADP) projectiles. Ammunition production at Hanford began in 1907 when the US government commissioned an examination to determine whether there was a need for new ammunition types. By 1922 nearly 1300 separate companies were producing munitions at Hanford. In 1945 alone,hanford produced 1 million rounds of ordnance. Today it is still one of America’s leading producers of munitions and firearms components. Ammunition production at Hanford began with cannons that fired shot from a long tube called a “fuse block” which was placed on an open firing platform above ground. The fuse block could hold up to 100 shots per minute or 10 rounds per minute for large cannon pieces like those used by American guns in World War I. In 1892 an Italian company started makingmunitions using small lead balls instead of shot which caused some concern that these new munitions might be defective but thisFear was unfounded as no serious accidents occurred during manufacture or use testing until 1903 when two British gunners were killed while loading their guns with Italian munition ball. It wasn't until 1917 that American engineers succeeded in perfecting an exploding shell designed by Major General John A Holmes which became known as "H" shaped projectile - this projectile had two legs sticking out from it like a spider's egg sac before expanding into its final form with both legs cut off just before impact). The development of artillery shells began with experiments conducted between 1868 and 1870 by Colonel James Brooke who developed what he called "a roundshot weighing three ounces (85 grams) capable Of inflicting fifteen minutes' damage". This trial demonstrated that not only could such a roundshot be fired accurately but also its high speed allowed for effective fire against targets far away from the soldier himself. The next year Brooke teamed up with Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong to develop what would become known as "Armstrong rifle shot" - this projectile consisted of a series of small lead balls filled with explosive followed by fuse blocks that functioned much like modern smoke grenades; when detonated they created an intense fireball that destroyed any target within range
