Grover Beach is a town in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 11,556 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sonoma County and part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Grover Beach post office was established in 1887. The name may be derived from General Lew Wallace's invasion of California in1849 and his battle withMexican general Pico de la Hoz on July 29, 1847 in Grover City near Petaluma.Wallingford had been a small settlement on Highway 101 northwest of Petaluma when it became one of several towns platted around Clear Lake during the late 19th century by early 21st-century residents seeking to capitalize on mineral discoveries in the area. By 1914, development around Clear Lake had increased sufficiently that Grover Beach was incorporated as a city within Santa Clara County. In 1912, then-Mayor John Fenton dedicated an 8-acre (3 ha) parkland southeast of downtown Grover Beach to honor Commodore Perry who had visited Sonoma County during its gold rush period two years earlier while military governor of California under Governor Blanco. Commodore Perry's visit also raised public awareness about various natural resources including wine production and local susceptibility to fire that were key reasons forSonoma County's rapid growth during this time period – although citrus fruit production continued to dominate until after World War II. In 1923, then-Notary Public Don Aiken gave land bordering Clear Lake east of town along Uva Street for municipal park use; today known as Municipal Park East . In 1927–8, Grover Beach built a new courthouse and jail at Third Street and Harbor Drive; today First United Methodist Church . This phase added 5 blocks extending from SE Fourth St & SE First Ave SW all the way down Harbour Drive thru grove northeast corner Uniview Dr & SE Second AveSW before terminating atSE Third AveSW
Grover Beach was founded on July 4, 1887 by Commodore John D. Sloat and his wife, Emma Sloat. The town was named for General Grover Cleveland because of the abundant groves of sugar cane that were located in the area. In 1914, Grover Beach became a city and was renamed after Mayor James P. Foley.
