Grover Beach is a small town in Inyo County, California, on the Pacific Coast. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Grover Beach is located on the eastern edge of Grover Bay. The first permanent settler in Grover Beach was William Culp who built a cabin in 1849. The original name for the town was "Newbies" because there were no other settlements in that area at that time. In 1856, J.D. Griggs and his family moved to Grover Beach from Isleta and named it after their old home where they had lived as children. In 1886, Mr. and Mrs. John Fenton bought land at present-day Placerville Boulevard and developed it into a town called Grover Beach with stores, homes, churches and schools. It wasn't until 1912 that developer Averell Harriman provided water service to Grover Beach which made it possible to build more businesses including the Siltanoff grocery store which opened in 1914 on First Street near today's High School (now known as Prominence Middle School). A fire destroyed most of Harriman's development during World War II; however he rebuilt many of his properties which are still standing today including what is now known as Harriman Park #1 (later renamed Hildebrandt Park), Harriman Park #2 (later renamed Playland) and later still Harriman Park #3 (later renamed Ocean View Terrace). After World War II, many residents left GroVER BEACH for various reasons such as job opportunities or moving closer to larger cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco but some returned over time such as Mrs.(Mrs.) Ethel Griffiths who moved back in 1954 to live adjacent to her childhood home now known as Griffiths House Museum/Griffiths House Historic Site along with her granddaughter Patrice Griffiths Driggs who lives there also currently....

Grover Beach was founded in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and his partner, H.L. Mencken. The name of the town is derived from a Native American word meaning "shoreline."
