In 1969, businessman Don Gillett donated land adjacent to his grove of redwoods for a shopping center that would become one of Grover's most popular attractions: Gillett Grove Shopping Center. The mall opened in 1978 and closed its doors in 2006; it was replaced by Pier 29 Marketplace which reopened on October 9, 2017 after being closed for two years due to an arson attack that affected several businesses within its complex including Sears Tower Outlet Store & Music Retailer across from Piers 29 & 30 Marketplace anchored by JCPenney store inside former Macy's property adjacent to Pier 29 Marketplace
