Grover Beach, California is a community located in Santa Barbara County, California. The city was founded on May 1, 1892 by George Grover and his wife Hannah. It was named for the groves of trees on the southwestern edge of town. As early as 1893, firearms were being sold at the local general store in Grover Beach. The first handgun sale in Grover Beach took place on October 3rd, 1893. On July 26th, 1895, the first shotgun sale took place in Grover Beach. In 1898, ammunition sales began and two years later saw the opening of the first post office in Grover Beach. In 1903-1904, gambling operations started to operate in Grover Beach with fifteen slot machines and twenty-six table games being available when it opened its doors to customers. By 1905-1906 there were over fifty businesses operating within walking distance of downtown Grover Beach thanks to waves of immigrants coming to America looking for work during that time period. Grover Beach is on the Pacific Ocean and bordered by Carpenteria to the south, Nob Hill to the east, Santa Rosa to the north and west, and Sausalito to the northwest. The first settlers in Grover Beach were fishermen who came from British Columbia in 1887. They founded a fishing village on an island in Carpenteria Harbor which they named after their friend, General John C. Frémont. The town was first established as a post office in 1907. As a result of its location on an important shipping route between San Francisco and Marin County, Grover Beaches became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern California during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1934, entrepreneur Harry Weisbrod purchased 8 acres (3 hectares) of land near Grover Beach for $2,000 dollars. Weisbrod built a tannery which he operated until his death in 1942. He left his business assets to his son-in-law Irving Jacobs who developed it into what is now known as Jacobs Tannery Company Limited which continues to operate today with over 100 employees. In 1949,industrialist Harvey Wolk bought part of Weisbrod's tannery and began producing sunflower oil which he marketed throughout North America until his retirement in 1978. During World War II, many people from Grover Beach served in military units including Navy Commander Alfred Pohlman who commandeered an American destroyer USS "Plymouth". After V-E Day (15 June 1945), Pohlman took his ship home through Hawaii and landed at Milne Bay Naval Air Station where he rejoined the US naval forces as commanding officer of USS "Hancock" (CVE-51). After World War II ended there were no more hostilities between America and Japan so Pohlman decided to sell his ship back to Americans rather than go through Japanese government hands again; this event is celebrated each year by veterans at Hancock's commissioning ceremony ashore during Honolulu International Fleet Week celebration.]
