Bullets in Grover Beach are a reminder of the battle that took place on December 7, 1876. That day, Californians fought against Mexico in what is now known as the Grover Beach War. The battle was fought near the present-day intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Third Street. The California Volunteers were a force of soldiers from California who volunteered to fight for their state in the Mexican-American War. A large contingent of these volunteers was sent to Grover Beach to help with the recruitment effort for this war. On December 7, 1876, many Californians decided to volunteer for military service in Mexico’s attempt to suppress American independence movements throughout the Southwest. At around 11am local time, Mexican soldiers began shelling Grover Beach from positions on Monterey Peninsula and nearby hillsides. In response, many Grover Beach residents enlisted in service and formed companies from individuals who had nothing else to do. By 2pm local time, there were over 100Grover Beach men fighting at sea or ashore against 5 Mexican battalions led by General Manuel de la Peña y Arellano. A US Naval squadron arrived at Monterey Peninsula shortly before 4pm during which time two cannon shots were fired into the air by Admiral David Dixon Porter as part of a show of force against Mexicos possible reinforcement attempt ashore. At about 5pm Captain John Wetherbee's gullible sailors discovered an anchored boat filled with munitions and marines waiting on shore (the first reported act of belligerent interference since America gained its independence). This demonstration convinced Mexicans that they needed not reinforcements if they wished to end hostilities quickly – but 8 more cannons opened up on GroverBeach within minutes after this shot being fired! By 6pm all boats had safely returned home – though one vessel did manageto beach itself just offshore causing some inconvenience for locals when vessels became stranded due to bad weather conditions;[1] but no loss resulted from this incident unfortunately!
