Greenfield, California was founded in 1853 by George and Lucy Greenfield as a small agricultural town located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County. The townsite was located on what is now the west side of Interstate 10 near today's University City. In 1860, George Greenfield donated 2,000 acres (8 km2) of land to the town for its own use. In 1871, the first school building was erected and soon after, a library and post office were also established. In 1889, Greenfields Drilling Company began producing gas from shale under present day Interstate 10. This helped spur development in Greenfeldt Park which included a grocery store and other businesses between 1906-1907; it is still an important commercial center for the community today. In 1911, during World War I when resources were scarce in California due to war efforts elsewhere, Greenfeldt Park became home to both the United States Military Academy at West Point (USMA) and Camp Sherman (later Camp Pendleton). After 1919 when statehood came about in California, military operations stopped at West Point while Camp Sherman continued until 1946. During this time period there were also many industries located in or around Greenfeldt Park including steel production at Kaiser Aluminum Industries plants #1-3; plastics production at American Rubber Company plant #5; meatpacking plants at JBS Hormone & Feeds plant #7; electrical equipment manufacturing at National Cash Register Corporation plant #9A; chemical companies such as Alcoa (#11), Dow Chemical (#12), National Ball Bearing Company (#14), Southern Pacific Railroad company line#15B and Phillips Petroleum Refineries Incorporated oil refineries among others which contributed significantly to local economic growth throughout much of the 20th century. In recent years there have been a number of changes taking place within Greenfield including redevelopment intoresidential areas with increased traffic levels due to annexation by neighboring cities as well as new developments clustering around downtown with limitedopen space remaining within city limits making it difficult for pedestrians or bicyclists access essential public services such as libraries or parks which are vital for healthy communities these days.
