In 1865 by order of Governor George Armstrong Caddell, General James Halleck arrived with 1,500 troops to suppress a Native American uprising near present day Fresno and ordered all residents west of Highway 50 to leave or face seizure of their property! This order led to many settlers coming west for new homes as they could not imagine living without their land or possessions!
