Greenfield was founded in 1853 by George and Cynthia Appleton, two farmers who were looking for a new place to live. The town was named after Greenfield, Massachusetts, where their father had been born in 1784. The Appletons set up a small farm on the east side of Greenfield Lake and began to sell goods from their store. In 1865, they built the first post office in Greenfield. By 1875, the town had grown to about 100 residents. In 1879, theAppleton family sold the town to James Fenton and his brothers-in-law Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. They built a mill that provided water for the town and started to grow crops. The Fenton brothers also erected a school house and began to build stores and houses. By 1886, Greenfield had become an incorporated city with its own government. In 1905, it became an important center during World War I when General John J Pershing made it one of his headquarters during the war effort. During World War II, GreenFIELD played an important role in helping make America strong again by providing materials for aircraft production
Greenfield, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 17,591 at the 2010 census. It is located on both banks of the San Joaquin River and is part of the Fresno–Visalia-Monrovia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlement in what became Greenfield was made on February 14, 1847 byocrats John Coyle and Nicholas Astor as part of Rancho El Rancho Seco grant given to them by Governor Manuel Nieto. On July 7, 1848 Charles Stuart built his Hotel de Anza near the center of town. The first post office was established at Greenfield on January 12, 1850 by Elisha Holmes Norton. On November 2, 1860ueron Gillespie founded Gillespie's Landing on the east side of the river opposite present-day Greenfield Cemetery. This landing served as an early commercial center for Greenfield and its vicinity until it burned down in 1865 after being damaged by a flood caused by heavy rains from module Don Pedro de Mendocino y Uribe during that year's gold rush. In 1872 Charles Stuart donated land north of town to become what is now Rosemont Cemetery and Agricultural Market; this ground has been used intermittently for agricultural purposes ever since. In 1870s a large flour mill operated here; however when that mill closed in 1908 it left behind a deep hole in local soil which led to extensive reclamation project starting around 1912 which included approximately doubling of surface area to . Additionally much terracing (now called "Stuart Heights") was done here between 1915 and 1925 as part of efforts to improve water drainage southward alongriver into Fresno County
