Greenfield is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 4,611 at the 2010 census. It is located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The community was named for Greenfield, Massachusetts. The first post office in Greenfield opened on July 1, 1887. In 1909, the name was changed to written as "Greenfield", after Samuel Fenton Greene (1847-1920), an American who had come to California from New England in 1849. At that time there were only a few farms and residences in the area and most people lived near San Francisco or Oakland. agricultural land became available from 1908 through 1912 when a railroad station was built south of town on its present site. The original settlers were mostly farmers who worked with grapes or other crops until 1933 when heavy industry began to grow around Concord and North Berkeley; this led to a dramatic change in demographics of Greenfeldt as more factories replaced agriculture as the mainstay of economic life. In 1935, both towns agreed to annexation by Contra Costa County which created one large municipality with growing problems associated with overcrowding and traffic congestion within its borders; these problems lasted until 1986 when they were solved by creating three smaller municipalities which remain within Contra Costa County today: Antioch (to the north), Pittsburg (to the east) and Walnut Creek (to the south). Greenfield was incorporated as a town in 1847, and it became an incorporated city in 1903. The population of Greenfield was 27,611 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the first letter of each word in the town's name which are "G" for Gold and "F" for Field. The original town site was on land that is now part of La Cañada Flintridge. The first settler in Greenfield was John Fenton, who bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of Rancho Rincon de las Animas (Rancho Rincon) from José Manuel Carrillo y Costilla in 1846. José María Herrera soon followed with 2,000 acres (100 hectares). These early settlers were some of the most prosperous people in California during the mid-19th century because they had access to good grazing lands and could exploit natural resources such as timber and coal. In 1850, George Atherton founded what would become City Hall on Main Street just east of present day State Route 237. In 1851-52, James Picken built a grist mill on what is now Fountain Street near modern day City Hall; this mill later became known as Picken's Mill & House Museum . From here, business grew rapidly due to trade with surrounding communities such as Sacramento and Angels Camp. However, by 1860 only 1 out of 5 residents could afford to buy property within town limits due to high prices for goods relative to wages being paid elsewhere in California. This issue would be addressed again when Gold Rush fever hit the area that year – many people left for San Francisco en masse because there were no jobs back then outside of mining or ranching
