Greenfield is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Kingsburg–Pico Rivera Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by men who prospected for gold and silver in nearby hillsides in 1849. Gold was found in 1850, and silver in 1855; both led to rapid growth in Greenfield and surrounding areas as people began building mills to process the ore and sell the gas that came out of the mines. By 1870, Greenfield had an estimated population of 3,000. The townspeople built large frame homes with porches or steps leading up to them on high ground overlooking Buffalo Creek (now called Marsh Creek). One resident recalled that "our whole district [was] watered by Buffalo Creek...a short walk from our homes took us to where we got our water." As industry declined after World War II, many people left Greenfield for other towns around Kern County. But some residents kept their businesses open until they closed down or were discontinued due to economic conditions such as low prices for natural gas or competition from energy companies. In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest among these original residents in keeping their community alive and restoring it as a rural cultural center with events like summer music festivals, heritage walks, art exhibitions and more popularly known as 'the greenfields'. Greenfield's history begins with men prospecting for gold and silver in nearby hillsides during 1849-1850 when Gold was discovered near today's intersection of Highway 395 & US 101A - one of only two places on earth where this mineral could be mined at that time! At first there were just a few local citizens who explored these hillsides looking for any clues about what lay beneath the surface but soon enough entire villages started sprung up all over California! The area quickly became known as 'Goldsville' because so much gold was being found here! And since this area lay right next door to Los Angeles proper it quickly became one of most important centers within Southern California For awhile everything flowed into Goldsville including merchants shipping goods all over Southern California etc., but then things changed starting around 1860 when new transportation methods appeared which made it possible now days even larger quantities of minerals could be extracted efficiently – Railroads!! With businesses such as Amalgamated Copper Mines (founded 1865) lining Railroad tracks right through downtown Goldsville you can imagine how valuable it must have been back then! The city fathers realized however too late that if they wanted their city’s business attractions located within easy walking distance (ie Park Avenue) instead of across town they would need Streetscape Improvements/Design which didn’t happen until decades later but is still well worth doing today considering how busy Downtown streets are nowadays 🙂 After Railroads arrived things really went downhill for Goldsville… not literally though because some rich folks bought lots of land outside Rolling Hills so development stopped until finally all those abandoned buildings (mostly Frame Homes) turned into blight again starting around 1980!!! However I digress Although deprecated these historic buildings are still quite interesting from an architectural standpoint especially given their condition Which unfortunately includes lack of maintenance often causing major problems like termites getting inside etc.– mostly thanks to current owners who don’t seem interested In 1869 Goldfields Mining District No 2 Minerals Company established Camp Grant Ranch west side Of Buffalo Creek bedding Massive Silver Ore Fields lying between mountains east side Indian Wells Canyon This camp plat formed basis for future township name................. Greenfeld In 1880 Eugenia Sanger opened hermergency store at corner Main Street And Buffalo Creek Road....................... Now renamed Sanger's Grocery Store

Greenfield is a small town in the California Central Valley, located about 30 miles northeast of Fresno. The population was 5,582 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Greenfield were Spanish Missionaries in 1769. They named it San Francisco de Asís after their leader and patron saint, Francisco Xavier de Sales. In 1821, when Californians began to settle in this area, they called the town Asis (meaning "place where I am") because there was no Creek Indians living here then. In 1848 Gold Rush miners discovered gold here and by 1850 the town had a population of 400 residents. By 1860 it had reached 1,000 and by 1870 it had increased to 3,000 persons. With the discovery of more rich deposits around Fresno in 1881-82, Greenfield quickly became one of the most important mining towns in California. The railroad came through Greenfield in 1886 and during its heyday it helped increase trade between Greenfield and Fresno as well as bringing farm products into town for sale on nearby trains hauled by local farmers who unloaded their crops at station wagons on Market Street. Today you can still find some evidence of early railroad days including a large depot that was destroyed by fire in 1929 but which has been replaced with a brand new building on Railroad Avenue just north of Main Street which houses many local businesses including an old post office building from 1912 that has been converted into apartments).
