Greenfield is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is the seat of Contra Costa County government and has a population of over 175,000 people. The city was founded in 1879 by American immigrants who had come to the area from New England. Greenfield was incorporated as a city on July 1, 1914. The first gun business in Greenfield was operated by Peter Gage which sold pistols and knives to farmers and ranch hands. In 1881, Wm Hickey opened his own firearms store at 166 Elm Street in Greenfield. In 1886, John Fenton bought the store from Gage and continued to operate it until 1912 when he closed it for good. In 1902–1903, A.F. Hobbs organized a Gun Owners' Club that met at their home at 214 Elm Street to discuss ways of making sure gun control issues were addressed. From 1903 through 1911, Hobbs published "The Gun Owner's Manual" (now "The Gunman's Guide to Firearms Safety"). From 1907 through 1912, Redding Smith ran an ammunition business at 1115 Telegraph Road in Greenfield which became known as the “Gun Store of America” because its products were distributed throughout America via mail order only. Smith also operated a rifle range located adjacent to his business from 1907 until 1917 when it was destroyed by fire; however, portions of the range still remain extant today within Parkland Regional Park off Interstate 80 near Hayward Airport
