Greenfield is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 18,821 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city located in San Bernardino County after Riverside. The origins of Greenfield are obscure; but it is said that in 1853 Capt. John Sutter and his party discovered gold near what is now Greenfield. He named the area "Sutter's Mill" because he foundreasonable quantities of gold there. In 1855, James Fenton acquired the mill site from Capt. Sutter for $5,000 and built a gristmill on it which began producing flour for local restaurants and stores in 1865. In 1896, Jens Olsen started farming land adjacent to the mill which became known as Olson Ranch (later Rancho Cucamonga). In 1912, he sold 1/3 of his interest to George Peabody & Sons for $1 million dollars making Greenfield one of largest agricultural towns in America at that time. The years following World War II saw heavy participation by the military with various factories being established in nearby El Monte during this time including Fisher Body (now Fisher-Price), Lockheed Martin (now Lockheed Martin Space Company) and Kaiser Aluminum Company among others Today Greenfield has many major businesses such as car dealerships, medical clinics and other large companies scattered throughout its downtown area as well as numerous small businesses lining Main Street. Greenfield, California is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. It is located about 30 miles north-northwest of Fresno and 120 miles east-northeast of Sacramento. The earliest known inhabitants of Greenfield were the Ohlone people who lived on what is now the eastern edge of town. They developed corn and other crops, hunted deer and bear, and made baskets from reeds. In 1821, Mexican President Juan Bautista Alvarado granted Rancho San Francisco to John C. Fremont for $5,000 Fremont named his land Rancho Santa Clara de la Garza after his old friend José Garza y Costilla, a viceroy in Mexico City who had helped finance his gold discovery at Sutter's Mill in 1849. The first European to visit Greenfield was Captain James Cook on July 17th 1777 while exploring the northwest coast of North America along what is now called Oregon Trail route #1 Cook landed on the mouth of Aquarius River where he built a small fort to explore possible sites for an American colony or trading post. He left two cannons behind as token of British possession but no evidence remains that any buildings or settlers ever existed hereabouts A second group from Britain led by Colonel William Richardson arrived during winter quarters at Dumas Bay near Greenfield on February 13th 1778 under Rear Admiral George Vancouver with HMS Discovery which carried provisions for Richardsons' party only After meeting local natives who told them about pleasant country to be explored further downriver they set out again March 12th1778 with over 50 men including Richardsons against advice from Admiralty commander Commodore Robert Browning who felt this would be suicidal attempt given hostile natives could intercept their supplies convoy
