The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The name Greenfield comes from Spanish meaning "new fields." At one time, most of what is now Greenfield was part of Yreka and then Madera counties. In 1887, George A. Smith founded an agricultural co-operative here which became known as GreenFIELD COOPERATIVE FARMING LTD. In 1905, when irrigation became available through canals dug through the mountains to irrigate farmland in eastern Fresno County, Greenfield prospered because it had access to water supplies that were unavailable to other towns in southeastern Fresno County.Today's economy revolves around agriculture with a significant manufacturing sector as well; many businesses are led by farmers or their families who continue to operate their farms and factories on a self-sufficient basis.. In 1940, during World War II, Greenfield joined the United States Air Force as an airbase for bomber operations over North Africa and Iraq. It served untilactivatedin 1991 after being used primarily for training fighter pilots and missile developers at nearby Redding Municipal Airport

Greenfield is a town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greenfield was founded in 1853 by men from Northern California and southern Oregon who were seeking a new home for their families after leaving their previous holdings in what is now Nevada and Arizona. They named their town after Green River, which they saw running through the nearby mountains. The first settlers arrived in 1853, but it wasn’t until 1857 that Greenfield became a full-fledged community under the leadership of Capt. Caleb Pease and Dr. George Sleeper. At that time, it was located on the banks of the now defunct Santa Clara River near present-day Nutley and Prineville. Over time, other pioneers also came to live here, including Levi Strauss and his brother Strauss & Co., Ezra Taft Benson (founder of Yale University), Jethro Tull (the father of rock ‘n’ roll music), Atherton Parsons (founder of Atherton Industries) and others who helped make Greenfield into an府里斯坦
In 1859, Greenfield was platted and named after Colonel George Greenfield of the California Battalion of Volunteer Infantry. The first store in Greenfield was built on the corner of Broadway and Second Street. In 1865, a post office was established at Greenfield by order of Governor John C. Fremont. The town grew rapidly due to its location along the wagon road connecting Stockton with Sacramento and other parts of California. By 1870, there were over 50 businesses in Greenfield. In 1872, a water tank was built near the intersection of First and Third Streets to provide drinking water for the townspeople and animals. A millinery shop also opened in Greenfeldt’s Store in 1875. A school was established in Greenfield in 1879 by Reverend Elisha Bogan as an agricultural school for girls under the direction of Mrs. Abigail Rodgers Richardson. The first teacher at the school was Miss Hester Morse who taught from December 1, 1880 to May 4th, 1881; then Drusilla Ladd who taught from October 5th until her death on November 7th,. From 1886 until 1889, Rev. Mryon Purdy served as priest at the school before being transferred to Folsom Jail where he died on January 10th 1893 .
