The first Europeans who set foot in what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish missionaries in 1769. They named it after their original land grant of Rancho Santiago de Santa Clara. At that time there was no town or village within its boundaries; all services were provided by ranch hands who lived scattered around other parts of the county.
In 1868 an act of Congress designated Contra Costa County as part of Alameda County for mail delivery purposes only. In 1876 Greenfield became an incorporated town with a vote by its citizens to annex part of Richmond via a referendum.

A company was organized in 1861 under the name Central Pacific Railroad Company for this purpose but nothing came of it.
On July 25, 1912, local resident Herb Welch killed two men working for Northern Pacific Railway while they rested at his home after lunch; he then robbered them before fleeing into neighboring Antiochia Township where he took refuge with his family until law enforcement arrived. Welch served three terms as mayor (1927-1932) before his execution resulting from prison overcrowding led to his recall from office in 1942 and prohibitionist policies during World War II led him back into politics as mayor pro tem (1945-1946). In 1949 Welch unsuccessfully ran for state assembly seat against Democratic incumbent Ralph Yarborough but eventually became Mayoralty Pro Tem again from 1951-1957 under newly elected Governor Goodwin Liu.. He died on October 2nd 1957 at age 96 years old after long battle with cancer.Welch@HerbWelch

In 1954 voters passed Measure M making Greenfield an unincorporated community subject only to certain regulations set forth by its trustees including fire prevention ordinances.< ref >MeasureM/GreenfeldTrustees Order 04
In 1984 Measure M was repealed due to lack of response so measures like this continue today.
On November 15th 2006 residents voted 3 – 1 notifies management that they will be redeveloping much area between Richards Street & Main Street according to plan proposed earlier this year < br />On December 5th 2006 when voting continued despite rain interruption residents watched as bulldozers smashed through barricades stopping development entirely

Greenfield is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The first permanent Europeans to visit what is now Kern County were prospectors who traveled up the San Joaquin Valley in 1846-47. They found rich deposits of silver and other minerals that led to a boom in mining until 1853 when malaria caused amines to close and prices to drop. Gold was discovered nearby but it took another decade for this new industry to take off because transportation became available only after railroads were built through the valley linking Greenfield with Bakersfield and other cities. In 1890, an act by Congress designated Kern County as an agricultural county with a focus on growing crops such as cotton and corn instead of gold or silver mines which led to more development in agriculture including land purchases by ranchers and farmers who leased their plots from local authorities for grazing purposes or used them for housing during wine country days when wines were being produced near Greenfeldt Airport (later renamed Davis-Monthan AFB). In 1957, when Yosemite National Park was established within Yosemite Valley boundaries, much of what are now Orinda Township (northwest side), Sunnyside Township (southwest corner), Clear Lake Township (eastside), Parkland Township ( northeast corner) and part of Cerritos Creek Rancho(now Bonita Springs) came under park jurisdiction; these townships have since become largely suburban with a large number of homes built on open space adjacent to freewaysand airports
