Grass Valley is located in San Joaquin County, California on the banks of the Sacramento River. It is bordered by Stockton to the east, Modesto to the north, Redding to the west and Livermore to the south. The population of Grass Valley was estimated at over 60,000 in 2000. The first person to live in Grass Valley was John Denton in 1868. He built a cabin on land he purchased from Rancho San Vicente de Anza (now part of Livermore). Denton named his settlement after nearby Grass Valley Creek which he believed would offer good grazing for cattle. In 1872, Robert Hutton built a small brick building near present-day City Center which served as town hall and later as an agricultural store. Hutton moved his business across the river into Redding in 1875 when it became apparent that Stockton would not allow him to build a store within its limits. In 1895, while working at his farm one day, George Eastman discovered gold nuggets at Sutter’s Mill on Nowata Creek nearpresent-day downtown Grass Valleysouth end of town.. Eastman donated these gems to GrassValley Museum which opened its doors in 1965.. In 1865 Potrero Hill resident John Tevis founded Tevis Land & Water Company with help from fellow Californian Edwin Tevis Sr.. Expansion of the grasslands of California began with the arrival of Europeans in 1769. The area that is now Grass Valley was first settled by Native Americans, most notably the Yokuts. The first European to explore and settle this region was Jedediah Smith, who explored the Transcontinental Trail in 1809. In 1847, Captain Folsom founded a ranch at what is now Grass Valley while on his journey from Sacramento to Monterey Bay. This led to the founding of several other ranches in Grass Valley over the next few years. By 1865, it had become a town and was renamed after General George Custer during his battle with Sitting Bull on July 25th near present-day Grass Valley.
