Grass Valley is located in the southern end of San Joaquin County, California. The town originally was established by brothers George and Jacob Grass as a farming community in 1861. By 1882, Grass Valley had grown to become an important agricultural center with over one hundred thousand acres of land irrigated through irrigation ditches and canals. The early history of Grass Valley is intertwined with that of the adjacent valley towns of Moraga and Livermore. In 1861, George and Jacob Grass purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) east of present-day Grass Valley from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $10 per acre. They began to fence in their new land and built a rudimentary school on the property which they named after their father, Isaac grass. In 1868, John Sutter arrived in Central California and started trading goods with the local Native American tribes. He noticed an area near Livermore called "Mountain Meadows" which he thought would make a good site for his new rancho (ranch). Sutter bought the Rancho Doniphan from José Altamirano on November 15, 1868 for $27 per acre. This purchase made him one of the first white men to enter what is now Kern County. Sutter continued to trade goods with Native Americans until his death in 1872 at age 49 from tuberculosis aboard ship voyage back home from India. After Sutter's death, his son William took over management of Rancho Doniphan until it was sold byradical ranchers such as John Doolittle to James Buchanan Robb in 1909 for $2 million ($27 million today). With the arrival of railroads into central California during this time period, Grass Valley became an important transportation hub for goods moving throughout San Joaquin County and beyond. The first railroad bridge across San Joaquin River was built here in 1863 by entrepreneur John Pembroke & Co.. These days, you can still see evidence of these early bridges including stone piers that were reused multiple times! The 1850's saw heavy population growth due to cheap labor available in Northern California during Gold Rush era agriculture frenzy led by entrepreneurs such as Jedediah Smith who founded Sierra Nevada Agricultural Society along with others like Wm Hensley & Bros., Peter Burnett & Sons., Jno Mosely & Brothers sownd other pioneers who contributed much towards building modern day Fresno and other centralCalifornia towns...Today many descendants continue old family values like hard work ethic & selfless service

From here, they traveled up the Sacramento River and into present-day Nevada and Oregon. In 1828, Captain John C. Fremont discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in Grass Valley; this led to increased activity in the region, which became known as Gold Country. Mining operations continued through the 1850s and 1860s, but exploration stopped after Indians began using firearms to resist miners. In 1868, Californian General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in central California and ordered Major James Hovey to establish a military post at Grass Valley; Hovey named his new outpost Fort Donner. By 1870, Donnersville had become a prosperous town with stores, churches, schools and a hospital. However, by 1871 it was abandoned due to lack of food and water resources; major floods also destroyed many homes in 1865–1871). A mill started up again around 1880 by Jepson & Co., renamed Midway Mills after its founder Amos Midway (a man who had built mills near Stockton). This mill produced flour for local grocery stores until 1911 when it burned down because of overuse by farmers who used too much water from streams that ran through their land adjacent to Midway Mills property - what is now eastbound I-580 across from town limits
