There were no wells or other means of irrigation until about 1905 when water arrived via a canal built by Northern Pacific Railway workers who connected Grass Valley with Redding and other towns in eastern California. In 1906, the incorporation of Grass Valley was successful due to its location next to two canals- one linking Redding with Sacramento and another connecting Stockton with Reno- Nevada. At that time there were only a few hundred people living in Grass Valley but it quickly grew into one of the most important agricultural communities in western California due to its quality soil, ample water resources, easy access to transportation (particularly railroads), friendly inhabitants, and good educational opportunities for children attending schools within walking distance of many homes. In 1970, Cal Poly Pomona (later renamed Pomona University) opened its doors here as a college campus making Grass Valley even more accessible for educationally inclined citizens who wished to move away from cities or rural areas into suburbs closer to metropolitan areas like Los Angeles or San Francisco Bay Area neighborhoods like Palo Alto orOakland
