In the early 1800s, grassy hills and valleys in what is now Grass Valley were used for growing crops. The area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1700s. In 1849, a group of farmers named Brown started to grow wheat and other crops in the area. They named their farm Grass Valley after the valley where they grew their crops. Over time, other farmers began to settle in the valley and started to cultivating other vegetables, fruits, and grains. By 1920, there were more than 100 businesses in Grass Valley with a total payroll of $50 million. During World War II, Grass Valley was one of the main manufacturing centers for ammunition for the War Department. Many factories were built here including American Cyanamid Company (ACM), Western Electric Company (WE), Lockheed Martin Aircraft Corporation (LMA), Boeing Aircraft Company (BA) and Raytheon Missile Systems Division (RMD). After World War II ended, many jobs went away as new industries came into being such as information technology, laser technology, biotechnology and defense contractors. Some residents of Grass Valley have continued to live here through these changes but most have moved out or left during this time period. Today, most people living ingrass valley are retirees or descendants of those who did live here during earlier times

In California, land grants were made to individuals and groups of settlers, including James Maynard Hutchins and other members of the Mormon Battalion who fought in the Mexican-American War. The region saw heavy wheat farming and ranching activity as well as a number of mills and mines; one such mine was Alexander Graham Bell’s famous Bell Telephone Company Menlo Park Mines on Onondaga Creek near San Francisco. In 1901, grazers began raising horses for milk production in what is now Grass Valley. By 1916, there were over 100 dairy farms operating in Grass Valley; by 1934, this had increased to over 1,500. During World War II (1939-1945), Grass Valley played an important role as a major military center with its airfields serving both American forces and Japanese forces engaged in combat throughout Northern California. After the war ended, much of the infrastructure used by wartime troops was abandoned or destroyed; however, some remaining buildings served as local government offices until they were replaced by more recent structures in the early 1970s.
