In 1853, Isadore Strauss developed an irrigation system for farming in this area which made Grass Valley one of the most important agricultural centers in southern California. After World War II, the area became known for its automotive manufacturing industry as a result of the growth of nearby San Joaquin Valley residences and businesses. The community formed around Central Avenue which ran through it and served as a commercial and social center for many years. Today, Central Avenue remains a main artery with few resident businesses remaining on it since most have relocated to newer neighborhoods or closed down due to lack of customers or competition from new businesses opening up in similar locations throughout Fresno County. One major attraction in Grass Valley are its history-rich buildings and sites including Strauss' original irrigation system development site and numerous ranch homes built during the 1920s through 1930s by farmers who were expanding their operations into what is now Fresno County. There also are several smaller museums located throughout town along with several interesting shops/cafes/bars/restaurants surrounding Central Ave., making it one of the more popular tourist destinations in south central Fresno County.

In 1929, Grass Valley became an incorporated municipality. In 1945, the United States Military drove out the Mexican Army in what is now known as the Alamo Raid. As a result of this event, many American soldiers were stationed in Grass Valley and it become an important military base during World War II. The grasslands that are now part of Grass Valley were first used to grow hay for livestock in the 1800s. By 1910, however, there was already a large housing development in the area and GrasValley began to grow rapidly as a result of this new population growth. The Mayor of Grass Valley at the time described GrasValley as "a beautiful valley with rolling hills on one side and deep bluegrass on the other." During World War II,Grass Valley played an important role both offensively and defensively. The town was home to over 5000 American servicemen who underwent training at various military bases throughout California before being deployed to fight in Europe and Asia. Many people from Grass Valley also worked on these battlefields helping to defend their homes or providing goods and services to troops living nearby. Today,Grass Valleys continuing importance as a commercial center makes it one of Causalys most important economic engines within its community; Additionally,the city has made strides towards becoming more environmentally conscious by creating green infrastructure such as bike trails and rain gardens which help reduce water use by businesses within its boundaries
