The community's name is derived from a Rancho Grande land grant given to Francisco Xavier Menéndez by José Joaquín Cámpora in 1846. The grant extended from what is now the eastern edge of what is now Grand Terrace eastward to Whatcom County. Much of the development around Grand Terrace took place after World War II when many people were relocated to Los Angeles for work during the war effort; many others moved into the area after they were given grants or other forms of assistance by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1925, there were only five residents living in Grand Terrace and seven businesses; by 1930, however, there had been more than seventy-five businesses organized as a town center with over one thousand residents. By 1940, ninety-eight percent of all business activity occurred within one mile (1 km) of either side of Highway 95 which served as the main artery through Visalia and later Kern County.
Grand Terrace is located in Orange County, California and it was named for General George Armstrong Custer. The town was platted in 1879 by James Irvine and it became a post office in 1886. In 1907, the community had a population of 300 people and it became an incorporated town in 1912. It had a population of 2,500 people when it lost its status as an incorporated town due to annexation by Westminster. Grand Terrace was designated as the seat of government for Orange County on January 1, 1916.
