Grand Terrace, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The first settlement in what would become Contra Costa County was made by Native Americans in 1847. A post office called Grand Terrace was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1899. The city was founded on December 12, 1898 by John Saylor and his wife Emma. They named their town after their home state of Michigan (Grand Tracey), which they had visited when honeymooning there with their children three years earlier. Groundbreaking for the city began on December 12, 1898 and ended less than a year later on January 6, 1899 when Emma Saylor died from tuberculosis while vacationing with her family in Oregon; John Saylor completed construction of the first church building that same year and dedicated it to his wife's memory two days later. The growth of Grand Terrace led to the annexation of other nearby towns including Walnut Creek and Hercules during 1906-1907 due to incorporation efforts by various community leaders; this annexation led to increased competition between these towns for development tax revenues which limited social programs available to residents within each town limits. On July 14, 1916 Mayor Arthur Wickersham proposed to merge all six cities into one entity under his leadership as an effort to improve communication between these cities; however this proposal never received serious consideration because it conflicted with new ordinances enacted by then-Mayor Harry Jaffe seeking greater separation among these cities' respective jurisdictions; accordingly, no merger occurred until 1950 when both Contra Costa County and Alameda Counties were created as part of separate local government structures pursuant to Act 527 of that year. In 1978 Grand Terrace became an international center for environmentally friendly technology exhibition known as Green Expo USA; since its inception over 400 exhibitors have participated from 25 countries at fifteen different venues across seventeen stateside locations across four continents; concurrently Green Expo Japan has also relocated from Kyoto Prefecture following a successful bid process that included input from residents within Grand Terrice’s borders

The site where Grand Terrace now stands was first inhabited by the Mono people. In 1824, José Maria Asunción and his party of Missionaries arrived in what is now Grand Terrace and founded Rancho San Bernardino de las Pulgas on these lands. The Asunción family continued to live there until 1850 when they sold their holdings to Manuel Nieto. In 1857, Mexican land grants were made available for settlement within Spanish Alta California; one grant went to José Antonio Canizares for the area around present-day Grand Terrace and El Sobrante creek. Canizares named his new town after his father-in-law's home village, Santa Clara de Tabora (then part of Mexico). A post office called Santa Clara de Tabora was established in 1858, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1865, John Sutter discovered gold near present-day Redlands; he named his discovery "Sutter's Mill" after him. The town started out as a small farming community with only a few homes and $5 per capita GDP in 1870. However, following Sutter's initial discovery and investment into refining gold stocks lead to an increase in population from 1,500 to 10,000 during the 1870s alone; this growth led to increased demand for goods produced by local farmers such as flour and butter while also creating new opportunities for industry including mining and smelting operations which soon became self-sufficient with annual sales exceeding $1 million by 1880 By 1900 most residents had either left or moved away because of technological advances making it possible to extract valuable resources from country that hitherto had been difficult or impossible to mine economically including silver deposits at Fillmore Lake which yielded over 25% silver content annually between 1861-1875 according to US Geological Survey data . With these new developments came major changes for both workers who had formerly relied on subsistence agriculture lifestyles with little prospect for economic advancement yet saw improved working conditions at mines while families enjoyed accessinda services like water systems (later extended statewide), high school education leading eventuallyto professional careers among many industrialists as well as wealthier citizens although military service still played an important role especially during World War I One result of this rapid growth was an Increase in housing prices especially along State Route 243 where developers constructed hundreds of homespun blocks starting about 1915 primarily overlooking Fillmore Lake becoming known as "Garden Row" later subdivided into neighborhoods like Echo Park/Silverlake/Vinegar Hill etc culminating around 1940 with large projects such as Topanga Canyon Estates becoming fashionable starter homes further increasing prices up until c2010s when they stabilized

On June 24, 1853, American Commodore John Davenport approached Yerba Buena Cove in present-day Pasadena with a design for a new harbor on Laguna Beach opposite Santa Monica Boulevard due to its potential naval significance as a base for operations against Russian forces on suspicion that they were building shipyards near Monterey Peninsula in preparation for such an operation; however this development was never realized due to Russian interest indeveloping this port instead
