The area now known as Grand Terrace was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. After gold was found at Sutter's Mill in 1848, settlers began to arrive and build homes on what is now Grand Terrace Boulevard. In 1870, the first post office opened in the community and it remained an important stop on the railroad until it closed in 1928. In 1915, a new elementary school was built on land donated by Mrs. Augustus Haughey and named after her husband Augustus Haughey Sr.. The name changed to grand Terrace Elementary School in 1922 when it became part of the newly formed Linfield Union High School District. It served students from nearby Redding until 1964 when it merged with nearby MacArthur High School to form MacArthur-Linfield Unified School District #2. In 1984, as part of district reorganization within Alameda County, grand Terrace became an unincorporated community within the new San Ramon Valley Community College District #1 . Today there are several businesses that have been located here since before incorporation including: Applebees (opened 1974), Chipotle Mexican Grill (opened 1986), Starbucks Coffee (opened 1994), and Whole Foods Market (open 1997). Although there has been some consolidation over time - most notably with Applebees moving their headquarters to San Francisco - many of these businesses still sell groceries and carry out other similar functions across multiple locations throughout central Contra Costa County including Walnut Creek/Valley View/Sunnyvale/San Ramon Valley; Livermore; Hercules; Dublin; Concord; Pleasant Hill; Antioch/Folsom Hills; Eureka/Redwood City Hills; Fremont Heights/Walnut Creek Heights; Orinda/Lake Elsinore Hillsborough Township .
