Grand Terrace, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Imperial County, California. The population was 2,838 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Bernardino–Rancho Cucamonga county line. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grand Terrace were Spanish explorers who passed through in 1769. The area was part of Mexican land grant Rancho Niguel de la Mesa y los Palos Verdes and it was given to Juan Bautista Alvarado by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on March 3, 1821. In 1879, when California became a state, the ceded lands were divided among its citizens according to their respective share of vote in the statehood election. Of the original 240 square miles (636 km²), only 128 square miles (410 km²) remained unincorporated within present-day Grand Terrace limits when they were organized as a city in 1907 with an estimated population of 1,500 people. In 1910 there were 711 residents and 255 employees of three small businesses that operated out of two stores on "Old Stage Road" between Encino and Fullerton: RKO Pictures studios and several other motion pictures production facilities;[1][2][3] both locations are now long gone but their memories still linger around today as part of the fabric of downtown Encino which stretches back over 100 years! Grand Terrace is located in the Santa Clara County, California, region. It is a small town of about 10,000 people and was founded on October 15, 1887 by George H. Wickersham. The name "Grand Terrace" was chosen because it situates the town at the edge of a long ridge that provides natural grazing for sheep and other animals. The first post office in Grand Terrace opened on November 1, 1887. The first store in the town was called Gopher Canyon Cache and dealt in Indian goods. At first there were only three families living in the community: Mr. and Mrs. Wickersham, the Bolling family, and two Italian immigrants who had come to work as farmhands. In 1889, what is now Grand Terrace began to be developed as a village with a population of about 30 people. A primary early source of revenue for Grand Terrace came from selling water rights along nearby Coyote Creek to farmers for use irrigation purposes; this business continued until 1912 when new federal regulations prohibited such sales without prior written consent from local landowners. A number of grand opening ceremonies were held during this time including one on May 6th which honored then Mayor John Fenton (now part of Palo Alto). In 1915-16 an experimental electric streetcar line linking downtown Santa Clara with rural areas around Grand Terrace became operational providing transportation within town limits for residents primarily but not exclusively those working in downtown Santa Clara or its immediate environs; however due to high levels of vandalism against electric lines across Northern California during that period services were discontinued after just one year service interruption due largely to vandalism by resident groups upset over higher than necessary fares paid by passengers riding buses operated by SJR Corporation subsidiary Pacific Electric Railway Company Limited) In 1935-36 construction began on what is now North Main Street which connected downtown with what are now South Main Street and West Side Road leading northward from Interstate 5 freeway to provide full access southbound onto I-5 highway from east side of town while also forming an eastern border between downtown Santa Clara County (north side) and unincorporated community situating west side of Coyote Creek Valley

The first European to set foot on the present-day site of Grand Terrace was Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1527. The name "Grand Terrace" was given to the area by Captain James Cook as part of his exploration of Australia in 1770. In 1851, local farmers erected a small cabin on what is now the corner of Grand and Euclid Streets. By 1875, there were four businesses operating in the area: a grocery store, a bakery, a bank and a hotel. In 1916, resident John Sutherland bought 150 acres (60 hectares) adjacent to present-day Grand Terrace from J.P. Morgan for $10,000. Sutherland developed the area into an exclusive enclave for wealthy Americans which continues today as one of Los Angeles' most affluent neighborhoods. The first house on this block was built in 1924 by Edwin Beal and designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki. In 1926, actress Mae West purchased land east of Grand Terrace from developer Irving Knudsen for $25,000; she used it to build her mansion known as the Beverly Hills Hotel (now part of Regency Village). West's home remains one of LAS's many iconic properties and has been featured on numerous television shows including "The Sopranos". In 1957, actor Clark Gable moved from his childhood home at 120th Street and Lexington Avenue in Harlem to his own grandiose estate called Bel Air; he hired architect Edward Musgrove to design him a stately manor complete with tennis court and 9 bedrooms/9 bathrooms – one more than any other celebrity at that time! In 1961–62 when Interstate 10 became completed between Los Angeles and Santa Monica Boulevard, two lanes were added eastbound near Hillcrest Drive because up until then motorists had had to use Euclid Avenue westbound where it narrowed considerably at its eastern end between Third Street and Roosevelt Road due to surface conditions caused by ice buildup during wintertime
