It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is served by the Grand Terrace Independent School District. The area now known as Grand Terrace was first populated by Native Americans. Rancho Los Alamos Mexican land grant was given to Carlos Márquez in 1838. The name "Los Alamos" means "place where the mountains meet." The grant extended from present-day Santa Clara County to east of Yosemite National Park and included parts of what are now Calaveras and Mono Counties. In 1858, George Custer learned that he had been selected for command of an army regiment under Ulysses S. Grant, then commander of all American forces in India during the Indian Rebellion of 1857-1858. Grant offered Custer a job as an officer if he would accompany him to campaign against Kipling's Hindu force on their border with Oregon Territory (the same area that later became Inyo County). Custer accepted and departed for India on July 24, 1858.. Upon his return report in October 1860, Grant recommended that Custer be court martialed for Desertion but instead wasPromoted to lieutenant colonel.. The original Grand Terrace was a 640-acre (257 hectare) parcel of land in the city of Los Angeles, California. The land was donated by industrialist and philanthropist George Hearst to the city in 1907. In 1912, the city raised its own money by issuing $10,000 bonds for the purpose of purchasing the land from Hearst. The purchase price was $2 million. The first homes on Grand Terrace were built between 1911 and 1915 by architects Stanford White and Alfred Loewy. They were designed as high-end mansions for wealthy Los Angeles residents. In 1923, Hollywood mogul Cecil Bostwick purchased the entire block between Vine Street and Grand Avenue from White and Loewy for $3 million. He renamed it "Hollywood Boulevard". Bostwick used it as his private property, hosting movie premieres and other events there. In 1930, film producer Hal Roach bought all of Hollywood Boulevard from Bostwick for $5 million. He turned it into a movie palace known as "Roach's Alley". Roach used it to host premiere screenings of his movies as well as other programming such as dance shows and circuses. A fire destroyed part of Roach's Alley in 1941, but he regained ownership of most of it two years later when he merged his company with United Artists Corporation. UA also commissioned architect Edward Janssen to design a new headquarters building on Hollywood Boulevard that would become one of downtown Los Angeles' most popular tourist destinations during its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s
