Grand Terrace is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States. It lies east of the Kern River on the edge of the Mojave Desert. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,871. The first Europeans to visit Grand Terrace were Spaniards in 1769 and they named it San José de la Gorce ( Santa Clara Valley). The town was founded by Humboldt Bay Company men in 1853 as a winter station on their route from Sonora to Nevada. In 1863, a post office was established at Grand Terrace and remained in operation until 1912. In 1905, General William Tecumseh Sherman fought his last battle at Mohave Pass near present-day Topock Lake before moving westward into Arizona to secure supplies for his army during the Mexican–American War. At Mohave Pass Sherman ordered his cavalry commander, Colonel James Fenton Smith, to attack and destroy a detachment of Mexicans under Mexican Army general Juan Bautista Tejada who had broken through our lines en route from Tucson to Yuma City. The attack failed because Smith's troopers were too scattered and outnumbered; instead General Sherman advanced up the pass and defeated Tejada at what is now called Topock Lake. This event is sometimes cited as one of the great military successes of Sherman's career. Today much of what used to be Grand Terrace has been abandoned due to environmental degradation caused by mining activities going on there since then including open burning associated with gold prospecting operations which continue today some 7 miles away from where most people now live although they are not aware of this because all traffic coming into or leaving that area goes through Upland Road just past Pahrump Hills High School which also serves as both Grand Terrace Elementary School & Middle School which are located adjacent to Upland Rd.: There have been various proposals made over time for developing or redeveloping much or all of this land but no action has ever taken place: 1) A proposal for a large shopping mall consisting mostly residential development on about .5 acres north-west/south-west of Upland Rd.: 2) A proposal for parkland between Upland Rd./Pahrump Hills HS & Pahrump Hills West HS: 3) A proposal for housing developments primarily concentrated along Tranquility Lane close to Interstate 805 south/southeast thereof: 4) A proposal for an airport situated southeast/northwest of town center: 5) An application submitted by developer John Doherty seeking approval by the Regional Airport District (RAD)to build a new airport within walking distance (~3 km.)of existing local airports in Fillmore & Coalinga Valley areas

The name "Grand Terrace" is first mentioned in 1799 as part of a grant to the Cannery Company by Governor Manuel Nieto. The grant included land on the southern end of San Francisco Bay, including what is now Grand Terrace and part of today's Oakland. It was given to Captain George Vancouver for his exploration and mapping of the area south of San Francisco. In 1825, when California became a state, Captain George Vancouver was elected its first governor. He established grandiose plans for the day that California would become an American state, but they were never realized. In 1848, James Purdy bought 640 acres (225 ha) in present-day Grand Terrace from José Antonio Arguelles for $5 per acre ($40 per km²). As one of the major landowners in Northern California at this time, Purdy played an important role in shaping both who built and lived in North America during its earliest years. His holdings included extensive pastureland along with mineral rights to coal mines onshore and offshore near Monterey Bay. After Purdy’s death in 1853, his widow sold additional property including 624 acres (240 ha) east of present-day Grand Terrace to John Cranch for $10 per acre ($160 per km²). This addition increased Grand Terrace’s size from 106 acres (41 ha) to 479 acres (200 ha), making it one of the largest parcels ever awarded by Caltrans for development within East Contra Costa County. The road connecting Berkeley Heights with Antioch opened up much of this extra land after Cranch donated it as well as a portion of what is now Pleasanton Avenue between First Street and University Avenue in 1870. During World War II Japanese Americans living on or near Dillingham Airfield were interned there under suspicion that they might be spies or saboteurs because their loyalty lay with Japan rather than America. Many residents across North America helped support these Internment camps through various activities such as donations to local charities or volunteering their time at local hospitals while also avoiding Detection/Interrogation Services Detachment #2 which collected intelligence about camp inmates working inside farms or other civilians locations around the country during wartime; however some people did not want their neighbors turned into concentration camps like those located at Dillingham Airport where food was scarce and water rationing persisted until early 1945 when all internees were liberated by Ulysses S Grant's forces less than two weeks later
Grand Terrace was founded in 1853 by Captain John W. Armstrong and his wife, Mable. The Armstrongs were the first white settlers in what is now California. They named their land Grand Terrace because it stretched from Sacramento to Santa Barbara County. Other early families who lived here include the Lincolns, Earls, and Ziegfelds. The area around today's Grand Terrace was used as an agricultural rancho until 1907 when a railroad was built through the region and industry took over.
