Grand Terrace is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The town was founded by James Irvine in 1859 and became a part of the city of Santa Clara in 1871. The population of Grand Terrace was 5,684 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Rancho Grande de la Mesa, also called Rancho San José Viejo, which was about 12 miles east of present-day Grand Terrace. The first Europeans to visit what is nowGrand Terrace were Spanish Missionaries on their way to missionaries' work in Baja California in 1769. Father Francisco Xavier Menéndez arrived with his band of Jesuits on July 20, 1786 and named it after St. Teresa of Avila’s convent near Mexico City where he had been staying since April 1785 while performing missionary work in Nuevo Leon County (now Chihuahua). Juan Rodríguez Caballero, another Spaniard who served as an Indian fighter for General Manuel Micheltorena during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), also visited this area during that period; however no evidence has been found to support assertions that he named the community after himself or any other individual. In 1859 James Irvine established a ranchosantojados (or “old mission style homes”) within sight of modern day Grand Terrace proper on what is now known as Rancho Grande de la Mesa. In 1861 James Irvine sold his interest in Rancho Grande de la Mesa to Pio Pico for $1,000 and moved his family from Santa Clara into Grand Terrance. Rancho Grande de la Mesa continued being used as grazing land until 1906 when the entire ranch was annexation into Santa Clara County without incident. In 1907 Anson Phelps Dodge began construction on their new refinery at Vallejo Canyon and soon started using water rights from La Purísima Creek for irrigation purposes on portions of Rancho Grande de la Mesa adjoining their property; these activities led to increased development around Vallejo Canyon which caused ranchers to sell their holdings within grand terrace boundaries between 1911 and 1916 inclusive (see photos below). In 1916 incorporation as a city took place with its own government; this event marked not only the beginning but also an era in which much growth occurred within Grand Terance including: numerous mansion conversions/updates over various years culminating with John Wetherill’s purchase circa 1922 which transformed it into one of Northern California’s most fashionable neighborhoods; today many consider GT its Historic District having been inscribed onto both National Register listings dated October 15, 1990 (#7644) and November 3rd (#7682).
The first white people to live in the area now known as Grand Terrace were English settlers in 1797. The name was given to a tract of land near the intersection of San Fernando and Santa Anita Streets, which lay within Spanish territory at that time. In 1821, the area became part of California after it was added to the United States. At this time, grand Terrace became one of the most heavily populated areas on what is now Southern California due to its natural resources and its location on a major route linking Los Angeles with other parts of Southern California.
