Gun targets first appeared in Grand Terrace, California in the 1870s. The earliest examples of target shooting were conducted at the local Grit Mill on Paseo de la Constitución. At that mill, shooters used a variety of materials to hit their targets, including slate and lead shot. The first real commercial gun range in Grand Terrace was established by George Wernham in 1892. This range was located on the corner of Broadway and Highland Avenue and allowed customers to shoot handguns and shotguns. In 1907, J. Crouch opened a small store on Main Street called The Shooters’ Shop which became one of the most popular gun stores in town. In 1915, businessman John Sweeny bought The Shooters’ Shop and made it his own business run as a Shooting Gallery with an indoor firing gallery for visitors to view while they waited for their turn to shoot. By 1922, there were over twenty businesses operating within two blocks of each other on Center Street in downtown Grand Terrace. This period is known as “The Gun Century” because guns began becoming more common and easier to purchase throughout the country during this time period. This increase in gun ownership also led to an increased demand for ammunition and Target Shooting Supplies from retailers all over America. As target shooting became more popular throughout America, so too did its popularity within Grand Terrace – especially among residents of older age groups who enjoyed participating in these activities outdoors without fear of injury or damage from projectiles fired from firearms

The name "Grand Terrace" originated from a large acreage that was part of Rancho Santa Anita, which was granted to Adolphus Granden by Governor Pio Pico on October 3, 1881. In 1888, the town of Grand Terrace was organized as a result of a merger between the two towns of Santa Fe and Rancho La Brea. The name came from a stretch of majestic shoreline on the western edge of Los Angeles County that ran along both sides of Grand Terrace Boulevard. The population in 1890 was 2,898.
