In 1848 George Washington Goodwin purchased Rancho Seco de las Flores from Lorimer and renamed it after his grandfather General George Washington Goodwin, an American hero who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and won fame as a cavalry general during that conflict. Goodwin had come to Southern California to be Chancellor of University of California at Berkeley where he met Martha Jane Emerson shortly before she moved to America with her husband John Emerson in 1849. They settled in Pasadena and started their own publishing house there called The Clarendon Press which published notable writers such as

The first building on the site was a small shop run by Fung Wah Kuan and his wife, Jen-Hsun. The shop was burned down in 1849, but the town name "Grand Terrace" was first used in a deed dated May 10, 1850 to lease land for $2 per acre from James Sutter. In 1860, Grand Terrace became part of San Francisco and its Chinatown district became known as Little Tokyo.
